Googling for Dunstable Back Street - I find a Beds CC public notice dated Nov 2008 Traffic Regulation Order for Ashton Square/Back Street, Dunstable.

Google Maps finds me Ashton Square but no sign of Back Street

Ashton square was made into a shopping area in the late 70s i think ,behind the main road shops of high street south,i think back street was in between the backs of the shops and ashton square itself. ,i used to walk round that way as a child and there was a few old alley ways into the main road that were very old and dark.

Back St was behind Middle Row.

From a book by W H Derbyshire, town councillor, printed 1/9/1872

The Borough Gaol stood in the centre of town, the dungeons of which may still be seen under a house in Middle Row occupied by Mr D Janes. One cell extends a considerable distance under Back St, another dungeon extends about eight feet under the High Road.

In a recent book by Vivienne Evans the house is identified as 23 High St South.

The book that Vivienne Evans wrote (she is a local historian with lots of books under her belt) with the comment on Back St is called "Dunstable with the Priory".

You may be aware that " The Book Shop" in Church St, Dunstable sells many local history books. They have a website I believe.

Found this in the book 'Dunstable in Detail' by Nigel C Benson published 1986 by The Book Castle. It's in the BFHS library. It has 100 features of past and present interest all within a half mile radius of Dunstable's central cross-roads.

Ashton Street : This street is named after Frances Ashton whose Alms Houses were at the end, on the corner of West Street. Previously it was known as 'Back Street' because it was behind Middle Row.

There is a map of area in this book - I have scanned it but is too large to upload at the moment. I've just made it smaller. lets hope !

Also available from the BFHS book stall is an old ordnance survey map of Dunstable 1900 that you can get from Alan Godfrey Maps
