'The Slip' Widcombe, Bath

On one of my ancestors birth cert (1840) his address was Claverton Building,
Widcombe, but it also states 'The Slip'. Can anyone tell me what 'the slip' referred to please?

There was a Slip Road between Claverton Street (where Claverton Buildings were) and  the towpath.

I believe the dwellings along the slip road were later called Riverside Cottages.
