LUKEs of Cople
« on: Monday 13 April 09 09:46 UTC (UK) »

Sir Samuel Luke is listed as born in Southill, Beds in 1603. Does anyone know the birthplace of his father, Sir Samuel Luke? I can't find this info, but gather the family were Presbyterians, so possibly Scots?
Cheers
Bob

   Hi Bob ....

Sir Samuel Luke was the son of Sir Oliver Luke who married an Elizabeth Knightley date given 1599 Northants.
Sir Oliver was the son of Nicholas Luke and details of the manor at Cople can be found here..

      bedfordshire.gov.uk/.../CommunityArchives/Cople/Manors.aspx

It seems the Luke family was present at the manor from the late 1400's

Southill parish register shows the baptism of Samuel Luke, son of Oliver Luke Esq, on 27 Mar 1603, born 21 March

This was an old Cople family, going back to Sir Walter Luke, who married c1494. Not only was Sir Walter a Justice of the King's Bench, he was also my 13xg grandfather!

I've done a fair amount of research on them, but have found no mention of Presbyterianism. I can run off a report on them if you're interested.

Thanks for the link Bob. It works if the space between "and" and "times" is removed.

My line descends from a younger son, Paul, of a younger son who moved to Hunts. Paul born c 1601 was a second cousin of Sir Oliver, and as a consequence I haven't followed the Southill family in any detail. When in Cople the family held senior posts; Nicholas, son of Sir Walter being one of the Barons of the Exchequer for monarchs from Henry VIII through to Elizabeth I. This of course was earlier than the start of presbyterianism in England.

Are you connected to the Lukes?

Thanks Dave,
No no connection. Just looking at the Civil War possibilities for some of my ancestors from Bedfordshire.

The lack of a Luke Scottish connection has surprised me, David
I suppose non-Scots followed the Presb. faith too. Just shows it pays to think laterally!
Thanks for the offer of a report. If it's not problem I'd been keen to see it.
Regards
