Dee's Third Go Round Scavenger Hunt.....Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 09:07 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and It's Dee's turn....she's been waiting a while for this to come up so hope you can help her.

Apology here.........I thought it was Dee's second go round and I've just found out it's her third..........so hurry up and get stuck in............ Cheesy Cheesy

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Barbara

                               **************************

I’m stuck on my STEELES and GARROD ancestry.

Part of the problem is sorting through the varied spelling of the names. So far I have found STEELES-STEELS-STEELE-STEEL-STEELER-STYLES-STILES-STOOLES and a couple of unbelievable mistranscriptions, and GARROD-GARWOOD-GARROOD-GARRAD-GARRARD etc.

First the STEELES line……

My STEELES family I have traced back to my great great great grandfather Edward STEELES, sometimes called Edmund, who married Jane GARROD in Marham, Norfolk on 8th June 1801. I have seen the parish record for this marriage. The spelling of his name in that record was STYLES.

This couple went on to have 10 children that I know of, and I have the details of what happened to most of these children, and followed those that married down through the censuses.

Recently , thanks to a website posted by a Rootschatter, I found probate on a will of a Thomas STEELES  of Marham, who left his estate to be shared between his 6 nephews and nieces, the offspring of Edward STEELES, so I know Edward had at least one brother. I have no idea if the family had its origins in Marham, or moved there from somewhere else. Most of the men were wheelwrights, blacksmiths or carpenters.

I’d dearly love to be able to find Edward’s parents and any other information about his ancestry.

Now to the GARROD family……and this line is largely unknown to me.

Jane Garrod, while marrying in Marham, was born in Gooderstone, Norfolk. Unfortunately the marriage record did not mention her father’s name. From Census records, I know that she was born around 1780. Both the census records and her marriage record say she was born in Gooderstone.

There are a number of mentions of GARRODS/GARWOODS in the Censuses in Goooderstone, but my problem is forming them into a family and finding where Jane links into it.

There is little on the IGI for Gooderstone before 1800.

This is probably the family where I would appreciate any titbits of information that folks can scavenge. So any help is welcome.

There were also these three legible Steeles records in the Marham Parish Records Transcripts.....

16 Jul 1782    Thomas STYLES, single, married Mary SMITH, spinster, of the Parish of Pentney by banns.

9 Sept 1785   Francis STYLES, age 61, buried.

29 Dec 1808   Thomas STEELES, widower, married Mary MAN, single, by banns. Curate George Huh?? officiated.
      Witnesses: Sarah Young
                John Adams

The transcripts were extremely difficult to read. Many pages were in fact unreadable. The book had been wet and many pages damaged.

Hmmm...
We could do with Thomas and Mary Smith having an Edward and Thomas...
hey... that would be TOO easy.

Do you think that the Thomas remarried... a death for Mary Steeles nee Smith....  Undecided

Francis + Winifred only recorded as having an Edward

I don't know if Thomas had any children but I reckon he did marry twice.

On FreeReg there is the death of a Thomas Steeles in 1831 aged 77. In 1824 there is the death of a Mary Steeles aged 48....perhaps Mary Man?

But I've seen no sign of a death for Mary Smith.

Garrod and Garwood seem to have been swapped around at times.

Garrod/Garwood Steeles who married Ann Fox is Edward and Jane's son.

After 1837 births, deaths and marriages for Marham were in the district of Downham.
