I've managed to pin my MATTHEWS family down to New Street in Wellington, and I'm hoping this will enable someone to look them up in the censuses for 1851 and 1861. Your help would be much appreciated!
In 1851, I'm looking for a family including the following:
Henry Matthews - aged about 28 - born Ballinasloe, Galway Catherine Matthews - aged about 27 - born Hanley Green, Staffs
Henry and Catherine were living in New Street when they had a daughter born the following year (1852), and I'm hoping there might have been older siblings.
In 1861, I'd be looking for:
Henry Matthews - aged about 38 - born Ballinasloe, Galway Catherine Matthews - aged about 37 - born Hanley Green, Staffs Ann or Annie Matthews - aged 8 - born Wellington, Shropshire.
The household might include a Charles Matthews, also from Ballinasloe, Galway. Charles was living in New Street in a later census. He was two years older than Henry and could have been his brother.
Thanks a lot for any assistance!
All the best,
Steve

Thanks a lot, Tara. This is 1851, right? In which case, those could well be some siblings. And since Henry gave his occupation as 'traveller', I suppose it should be no surprise if he wasn't at home at census time!
I've no idea who the two 'aunts' were, but I'm guessing they might have been called 'Conniff' - which is a name originating from the same part of Ireland that Henry and Charles Matthews came from.
Thanks again for your time.
All the best,
Steve

yep sorry Steve forgot to say it is 1851
could have been 'Conniff' - was small, faded and very hard to read, hence no first name with the 66 year old aunt - i couldn't even give you any letters in the name - i think it had 4 letters though, and there was a big black line through her martial status so could see that at all.
The name May was also faded but that is what i think.
