Emigration from Leeds to Canada - 1880s
« on: Saturday 12 February 05 05:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Does anyone out there have an interest in ancestors who left Leeds for Canada in the early 1880s? I am wondering if there were organised migration schemes at the time. My interest arises because my g-grandparents went to Canada some time after 1881 and had their second child born in Canada before returning to Leeds before 1885-6.. I appears that my g-grandmother's sister and bro-in-law went to Canada at the same time. They did not return and I have 1901 census data from Quebec concerning them. There are other members of the immediate families above who I cannot trace in the subsequent UK censuses after 1881.

Was there widespread migration to Canada at the time? Who was driving it? The UK or Canadian govts, or private companies?

Thanks,

Peterb
