Fibiger Family
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 07:19 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone please help?

I have my family of Bells listed with an Agnes Fibiger b. c.1864 and probably her son Louis Fibiger age 4 months on the 1891 Census, living in Blackburn, Livingston.  The family story says that there was a Danish sea captain in the family and I think this is where that story fits in!  I also think that this might be a sister of William Bell b.1865.

Does anyone know anything that might help here - I don't really now where to start searching for ancestors at sea,

many thanks,

Pip Smiley

Hi Pip

Don't know if this helps or not, but I have found a F.B. Fibiger b abt 1864 on the ship "Cecilie" moored at Godshill Isle of Wight in the 1881 census for England. Born in Kopenehagen. Danish Subject.

In 1901 the family are living in South Shields Durham. Agnes born in Scotland, young Louis aged 10 born in South Shields and father Louis born in Denmark now a British citizen and occupation Foreman Rigger Shipyard.

Another question for you..............Is there any reason why Agnes Bell would use the name Brix instead of Bell?

Best wishes
Jean

PS If these are your family you should take a look at http://thepeerage.com/p8252.htm

Hi Jean,

Wow!!! I never expected anything like this!

I don't know anything about Agnes other than the information I have posted here, other than my Grandmother Janet Bell, saying she stayed in South Shields with an Aunt at some point, because her parents died in a flu epidemic?  Don't know whether this is right but these are initial searches into the Bell family,

thank you so much - I am totally amazed that this might well be true!

many thanks again,

Hi Claire

The reason I ask about the name Brix is that there is a marriage on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ for Lewis Fibiger and Agnes Brix or Margaret Ann Kirkwood Jan-Mar 1891 in South Shields and I thought that the Agnes Brix could be Agnes Bell (bad transcription?)

There is also the birth of Lewis John Fibiger Jan - Mar 1891 in South Shields. This fits with the Lewis found in the 1891 census in West Lothian.

The connection to the aristocracy is fascinating, if Agnes Bell and Agnes Brix are one and the same?

Best wishes
Jean

PS forgot to say that there is no birth for an Agnes Brix in Scotland from 1855-2006, so it looks more and more like the marriage entry has been badly transcribed. If it were me I would be very tempted indeed to send off for the marriage certificate. Smiley

Hi Jean,

The marriage certificate has arrived!  Cheesy

Very interesting reading!

It appears that Lewis Fibiger (widower) married Agnes Brix (widow).  Lewis, 28, was a Seaman, his father, Sophus Fibiger was a Master Mariner.  Agnes, 26, does not have an occupation but................her father is William Bell!

The residence of them both at the time of marriage was 65 West Holburn, South Shields.  I wonder was it a lodging house or was he lodging with her because of the nature of his job?

But now I wonder who F. B. Fibiger was down in Godshill, Isle of Wight?  Could this be a brother?

This is very ingtriguing, more digging to do I think!  If you would like a copy of the certificate I am willing to share,

Hi Claire

Really fascinating!

I've had a search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and found that an Agnes Bell married "somebody" Brix in 1883 in Leith Midlothian.

It's got to be the same Agnes. Fortunately she married 2 men with very unusual surnames.

As it's a Scottish certificate you'll get both parents names shown and prove, I would reckon,  that this is your Agnes Smiley

Hi Jean,

I have a copy of the marriage certificate.  Agnes Bell married Peter Brix December 1883. Peter was a Seaman and Agnes a Domestic Servant.

The parents are listed as follows which throws another spanner in the works so to speak:

Peter's parents were (I think, if I am reading this right) Otts Petersen and Jane (something) Brix.

Agnes's parents were William Bell and Mary Eulgane.

I have a copy of a page from the family Bible and Agnes's parents were William Bell and Mary Collins???

If you don't mind I will send a copy of this via PM and you can take a look and see what you think,

thanks again for everything,

Claire Smiley

Hi Claire

I have been looking at this surname from all angles and have come up with the following:-

I don't think there is any doubt that with the names Brix and Fibiger and the fact that Agnes and her son are found with her parents in 1891, we have the correct person.

Also you know from family folklore that South Shields plays a part in the family history.

Now imagine this scenario:-

Young Agnes, getting married for the first time to Mr Brix asks her mother what her maiden name is.

Agnes's mother is Irish ( from the 1891 census)

Mary says in a very broad Irish accent......Collins.

Now look at the spelling again on the m.c. I can see Culyanes.

Try yourself saying "Collins" in an Irish accent............Culyanes???!!!???

Best wishes
