silcocks/sherlocks Hoylake
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 09:05 UTC (UK) »

Looking for the parents of my great great grandfather James Silcock born 1859 in Hoylake there is no record of his birth  and no father named on his marriage cert. I Think that he may have changed his name from Sherlock to Silcock because there is a James Sherlock born 1859 living with his grandfather John Silcock in Meadons yard Hoylake on the 1871 census. If anyone can help me with this i would be very grateful.

On ancestry search page, It gives the short versions. There is a birth for a James Silcock Registered March in wirral but born in 1869.Probebly not yours but you never can tell. There are a few other Silcocks mentioned in various records for wirral.

Hello vienna

This is only a possibility for you to consider ....

If you follow John Silcock, the grandfather from the 1871 census, back to the 1851 census you will see that he had a daughter called Alice born about 1835. The census reference is Wirral HO107/2174 Folio 152 Page 8.

If you also look at Wirral RG9/2638 Folio 74 Page 10 on the 1861 census there is an Alice born 1835 married to a John Davies with a son aged 2 who is shown as James Davies. He is the only James on the 1861 census that matches the details of John Silcock’s grandson on the 1871 census - apart from the surname.

On FreeBMD there is a marriage registered at Wirral in the first quarter of 1861 (confirmed on Cheshire BMD) between a John Davies and an Alice Simcock. It is the only marriage for a John Davies in Wirral between 1851 and 1861.

There is no Alice Simcock born 1835 in Hoose on earlier censuses so this could be a misspelled Alice Silcock.

Although James is shown on the 1861 census as Davies, if he was born in 1859 then he would probably have been called something else beginning with “S” and ending in “ock”.

I cannot find John and Alice Davies after the 1861 census but if they died or emigrated it would explain why James was living with his grandfather in 1871.

Have a look and see what you think

HI posteria,I thought you might like to know i have been looking into the information you gave me and i think you may be on to something. My Grandmothers name was Alice, is it possible she was named after Alice Davis? I think i need to look into this further. Thanks again for your help. Vienna.
