Hello Carole,
In 1871, in Edinburgh, there's an Ellen BEDFORD, 13 (i.e. b ca 1858), birthplace listed as Edinburgh, Niece, in the household of a John NICOL, a 50yo tailor born Fife.
I can't seem to trace her backwards or forwards. Others may have more success ...
JAP
PS: Cancel that! In 1881 she's with them as Helen REDFORD. And her birth in 1858 is on Familysearch. I'll post this anyway for purposes of elimination.

Helen Glass REDFORD was born in 1857, not 1858, to James REDFORD and Agnes BERTRAM in Castle & Portsburgh parish in the city of Edinburgh, GROS Ref 685/03 0520

But no trace whatsoever that I can see of Evangelina in the 1871 census for Scotland, using wildcards as well, nor in the 1871 census in England.
I'd be very tempted to put a tenner on Edward having been posted abroad, with the family following him to that foreign station, but that means that we can't have a look at the other kids. The annual Navy List records would assist the situation in terms of where the Admiralty sent him.
Hi again
As i said, I checked for marriages of Edith in Scotland and found nothing. I also checked for deaths and nothing so I did a global search and guess what I found
They were not quite 'abroad' - unless you call the land of my birth 'abroad' :
1871 Census
19 Park Place, Cardiff North,Glamorgan RG10/5356 F 55 Page 6
Eliza A Bedford, wife!, mar, 53, wife of Captain RN, b. Lancashire, Liverpool Edith B, dau, unm, 26, b. Ayrshire, Largs Anthony JB son, unm, 18, civil engineer, b. Argyllshire, Lochgilphead Evangelina, dau, 7, b, Argyllshire, Oban plus 2 servants
So Edith B somehow leaves the family between 1871 and 1881. I'll do some more investigation in E & W.

I found this about 15 mins ago but RC is going so slow
Found a marriage for Edith Blamire Bedford, Dec q, 1877, Totnes, Devon, vol 5b, page 331
Others on the page - James Price and William Tozer
So she's not our Eleanora
Awaiting the marriage cert with great anticipation!

I think I'm losing the will to live with this one, Carole
No Henrys that I can see in Scotland 1851-1861 and a few too many in England to tie down. No Elenora, Eleanor, Ellen, etc. b.c. 1855 that look like her.
I did find a Harry Bedford, aged 31 on the 1891 in Nether Hoyland, Yorkshire. I got quite excited because he was down as being b. Scotland on the index but the image clearly shows him as being b. Hoyland Nether and -do- (for Yorkshire). A possible brother that wasn't
Just a thought - maybe the household schedule on the 1881 for the Thompsons got mistaken by the enumerator and Hoyland became Scotland as in the previous example. The 1881 image clearly states Scotland but the entries in enumerator's books were copied from individual household schedule forms and mistakes were made.
At the moment, I can't think where else to look or what else to think

Scotland / Hoyland ?.....hmmmmmmm.......
Reading a flowery 'H' as 'Sc' would not be the first time that's happened. 'y' as 't', maybe aye, maybe naw, but if it's the 'y' where the left hand stroke is much higher than the right hand stroke .............

Well that's what the transcriber for a famous site saw it as so maybe, just maybe, a Yorkshire enumerator might have misread
