Hi Woolley
There are quite a few McDowal (variations) and some Agneses but none seem to fit very closely with your Agnes. Do you have any details of any other of her family?

Thats all I, ve got, maiden name from the birth cert of one of her children, although I believe she married in 1855 to a Micheal Hassett, not sure where - so it still loooks like a brick wall
Cheers Woolley

If she married in 1855 in Scotland, there should be quite a bit of info on a marriage cert - have you tried Scotlands People?
I'm just seeing if I can find her on the 1841 census.

The most likely family is living in Creetown (Kirkmabreck parish) which is adjacent to Minnigaff:
St John's St, Creetown 873 ED 8 P 8
Agnes McDowall, 35, pauper Janet, 13 James, 10 Isabella, 7 Agnes, 4 John, 6 Margaret Hutton, 65
all b. Kirkcudbrightshire
I'll see if I can find anything on the 1851.

She had 2 children born in scotland John born 1855 Airslere, Scotland and James born 1858 Riccarton, Scotland. All the family first appearred in the 1871 English Census.
I've had no success tracing them in Scotland todate

The family could have been non-C of Scotland which might explain her baptism not appearing. I can't find a marriage but again it could have been a non-C of Scotland one and not appear. JAP has a good account of these marriages , referenced here:

On the 1851, there is a possible in Sorn, Ayrshire, a female servant - right age but born Penninghame, Wigtownshire. Penninghame is the parish next west of Minnigaff.
I can't find the mother, Agnes on the 1851 as yet.

PS - I'm trying to find things but SP is running very slow

Not much luck so far - I'll see if I can track down any of the siblings.
The 1871 had her as 31 and the eldest two boys b. Renton which I think is in Dunbartonshire
The 1901 has her as 63
Like you - back tomorrow.

Found the family on the 1851 - still in Kirkmabreck
20 St John's Street, Creetown 873 ED 5 Page 9
Agness McDowall, 47, formerly domestic servant James, son, 20, labourer Agness, dau, 14, Alexander, son, 8 James Calrile, grdson, 2
all b. Kirkmabreck
Quite a lot of McDowalls/alts in Minnigaff on the 1851 but, like the MIs, no Agnes

Hi Woolley
I am intrigued by the age gap between the first two children and the second two on the 1871 and wonder if either or both of them might have been married before and come together only a few years before the 1871 census.
I've found this entry on the 1861 census. I think it might be the Creetown Agnes that I've found previously:
1861 Mettingham Castle, Mettingham, Suffolk RG9/1184 F 197 Page 13
James Cutting Tafford or Tofford, 61, vicar of Mettingham & JP for Suffolk, b. Weybread Louisa Ta/offord, 58, b. Warwick, Atherstone Louisa Charters To/afford, 33, b. Suffolk, Beccles? Agnes McDowell, 25, house servant, b. Scotland, Creetown Robert Spalding, 15, house servant, b. Suffolk, Lanfield
I love the names
I haven't yet found her on the 1871 or a marriage

Hopefully this one will post, seems to be a bit busy at the moment Never thought about it being a second marraige
Mettingham castle history mentions a Rev J Sofford at the time of the census (same one ?)
I,ve also found a possible in the 1861 scottish census under the name Harrett (typo?) Agnes , Micheal and James, so plenty to go at.
Thanks woolley

That one does fit with Michael's profile on the 1871, Woolley. This time Agnes is b. Wigtown - she got around

There is a baptism for an Agnes McDowall, Penninghame, Wigtownshire - 8 Nov 1837 Parents - Peter McDowall and Helen Digney.
This would fit with the Agnes that i found on the 1851 in Ayrshire.
Here's a map of the Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire parishes which shows how close the 4 parishes of Minnigaff, Penninghame, Kirkmabreck and Wigtown are :
