David Leonard Watkins, aged 7, died from whooping cough at the Rising Sun in Portway 26th May 1886. The witness on the death cert. is Eliza Watkins, residing at that address. Does anyone know anything about this establishment or Eliza? I think she might have been an aunt by blood or by marriage.

Hi ozlady,
There are a couple of Portways in Herefordshire - one near Burghill, the other near Staunton on Wye. Do you know which Portway?

It's the Burghill one, it's on the death cert. This has puzzled me for a while. The family were from Wellington so I assume Little David was staying/living with Eliza. Mum was a widow, Dad had died in 1883, brother John was about 17 so would have been working. There were several half brothers and sisters that I'm tracking down.

Hi Ozlady,
I had assumed that it would be the BUrghill one, and had a look at a couple of online historical directories - but the Rising Sun didn't seem to be mentioned. If I get a chance, I'll nip into Hereford this week or next and look in the local studies library and see if there is any mention there.
Bit of a mystery!

No joy I'm afraid.
I looked in 3 trade directories but none of them mentioned a pub called the Rising Sun in Burghill/Portway.
1886 Directory of Hereford, Ross and DIstrict No Watkins mentioned in Burghill, Portway or TIllington John Morris is the landlord of the only pub in Portway - the Royal Oak Inn
1891 Kellys Directory No Watkins in Burghill, Portway or Tillington Charles Walters is landlord of The Royal Oak P. H. In Wellington there is a Mrs Watkins at Wellington House, and John Watkins is listed as a carrier Two Rising Sun pubs are mentioned in Herefordshire - at Longtown, Abergavenny (William Cooper as landlord) and at Peterstow (THomas Hall is landlord)
1896 Kellys Directory No Watkins in Burghill, Portway or TIllington George Walters is landlord at Royal Oak There are no Watkins mentioned in Wellington
I got a book out from the library on Burghill, so I will have a read of that and see if I can see any mention of the Rising Sun or Watkins'
All the best,
Spider
