HUGHES & HANCOCK - data resources
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 17:27 UTC (UK) »

Can some kind, wise soul please advise where I can go to look up HANCOCK, JUDGE and SANDERS who lived in Wooburn [sic] and Little Marlow in the 18th century?

With many thanks

Hi Neil,

It is Wooburn!

I think your best bet would be through Bucks FHS. If you go to their website and look at their search services, you'll see they are very reasonable. e.g. a baptism surname search for a 100 year period costs £3. Ditto for marriages and burials - and their coverage is pretty good but you can double check Wooburn and Little Marlow coverage on the website. And you can do it all via email!

Just remembered - I've got Wooburn marriages on CD, so let me know if I can help with any specific look ups for your 3 surnames.

Hi Jill

Many thanks for that information, and so quickly too!

I have most of the marriage information, it's the births & deaths I'm looking for but I appreciate the offer.

I have used the services of a paid researcher for the main (HUGHES) thread till now (I live in Canada). She has done great work but I want to fill in some of the gaps.

I'll contact the Bucks FHS.

Thanks again, Neil

Hello Jill,

Can I ask you to see if you have a marriage for an Elizabeth Hancock to Thomas Vincent circa 1825 possibly in Wooburn.

Also Neil I wonder if we are looking for the same family?  I am trying to find Elizabeth's parents.

Fingers crossed!

Hi Abiam,

Really sorry but the marriages on the Bucks marriages CDs that I've got stop at 1812. I've never been able to figure out why this should be - 1837 I could understand.

All I can tell you is that there are lots of Hancock marriages in Wooburn pre 1812 so it seems very probable that your Elizabeth was married there.

Don't they just!!

I'd like to get my hands on Wooburn baptisms but they seem to be like hens teeth as well.

Have you tried requesting a name search from Bucks FHS?

www.bucksfhs.org.uk

I notice they have Wooburn marriages into 1900s on their database. They are very reasonable - and you can pay online and receive your search results by email if you'd like.

Hi Albian

I've looke at what I have but there in no Elizabeth HANCOCK included. All my HANCOCKs come through Jospeh and Rose JUDGE (m 1771 Wooburn).

Do you have details of who was ELizabeth's father? Joseph and Rose had 3 sons and the ages would be right to be her father. But as Jill writes, there are lots of HANCOCKs in Wooburn.

Sorry I can't help more.
Regards, Neil

Hi,
Digging deeper I have now found Elizabeth Hancock to be the second wife and therefore I am no longer looking at a Hancock family!

That's the good news. Grin

The bad news?  Cry

That I am now looking for an Elizabeth UNKNOWN!!! but still from Wooburn, Bucks.

So if you ever come across Thomas Vincent who married Elizabeth UNKNOWN probably in Wooburn in approximately 1825 please let me know Wink
