HI isobell,
I wondered if this is the same place:
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/YORKSGEN/2008-11/1226998106
If it was it looks as if it started off as an industrial school - this site tells you a little more about them:
http://www.hiddenlives.org.uk/articles/raggedschool.html
I haven't been able to find where records (if they still exist) are held, but I would start by ringing or emailing York Archives to see if they know:
http://www.york.gov.uk/libraries/archives/
Because you are trying to find out about someone who was alive less than 100 years ago there will be a privacy ruling. The archives will tell you if records do exist, and also how you can you apply to view them.
Hope this helps a little - good luck.

Hi Isobel
Welcome to Rootschat!

You could try the Borthwick Institute in York they hold info on lots of the old schools and homes in York.
