Hi all,
Some new info regarding the Mary Quirke Saga. We have recently found out
she was born Mary Carton. According to the Birth Record:
Date of Birth. 20 Sept 1899. Place. Workhouse, Wexford. Sex. Female.
Mother. Mary Carton. Father ---------?.

The 1911 census states Mary Carton (Mother) had married a Patrick Quirk (Without the E )
The daughter is still called Mary Carton & is listed being Patrick Quirk's
Stepdaughter.

You’ve probably already found this site:

http://kilmoregenealogy.com/hidden_wexford_genealogy/Wexford_Workhouse_Births.htm

From the site:

“The records below are a complete transcription of the first "Births in the Workhouse" book. The book spans the time frame of 1851 to 1893”

This seems to indicate that there are more books covering the period after 1893. It might be worth sending an e-mail to the address given.

I had a quick look at the 1911 Census entry and it seems that Patrick considered Mary to be his daughter but the enumerator changed his entry to read ‘step daughter’

It seems that my earlier search for a marriage before 1899 was a mistake (assuming they were married before Mary was born). The 1911 Census indicates they were married 10 years so this looks positive:

Name: Pat Quirke
Registration district: Enniscorthy
Record type: MARRIAGES
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1902
Volume: 4
Page: 475

Name: Mary Carton
Registration district: Enniscorthy
Record type: MARRIAGES
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1902
Volume: 4
Page: 475

You can order a cert from:

http://www.groireland.ie/docs/MarriageEnglishApp.doc

Good luck with your search.

Dara.
