How do I upload my files??

Hi,

I have a special programme - Second Site - which has created the pages etc for my web site - how do I upload these?

Can I do it in one go - ie - 1 folder rather than individual files.

As you can see guess this is my first time uploading anything.

You need to equip yourself with an FTP programme (File Transfer protocol)

have a look at http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Software/FTP_freeware/

which has some different ones.

The best ones generally have two windows open one from your computer and one on the remote computer (your web host) and its then just a matter of copying the files from one window to the other.

Just noticed the 2nd part of your question.

If the web pages created refer to specific named folders you should recreate (by copying if necessary) the exact sequence otherwise your pages will not show.

its also generally done to keep at least one page in the main (root) area of your remote web space. This is usually the index.html file (or welcome.html or home.html .... or htm)

Thanks for that - have installed prog. - now getting an error 530 - Authentication failed -

In server properties it ask for:
Name
FTP server
Account

I have put in :{my site name} .rootschat.net for all 3 - is that correct?

ID - a number plus the above

Do you - or anyone know which is wrong!!

Keith,

You may need to make sure that you dont have "Anonynmous FTP" selected. The username is the whole lot including the ".rootschat.net" part, yes, for both address and for username (don't put "ftp" infront of the FTP address).

Your password is case sensitive too (so careful with any capitals).

Hi Trystan,

I uploaded through the file manager - thats works fine - but it means one file (5 in a row) at a time - with my FTP programme it goes through a few checks at rootschat including my ID which is OK then says
PASS (hidden)
< 530 Authentication failed, sorry
530 Authentication failed, sorry
Connection closed

Something simple - but WHAT!!

PS Do I gather no images with .bmp or .tiff extensions?

What FTP software are you using, and what version is it. I may be able to try it from this end and try and work out what the problem might be.

It appears to me that the program may try to put "ftp" infront of the FTP server address (which it shouldn't).

Re your question about images .... you are correct only gif and jpg images will work (there are some newcomers like png that also work but generally stick to gif and jpegs and you'll be ok.

Hi Falkyrn,

Thanks for that Falkyrn - wish I knew that before hand - someone told me if I was editting photos always use .tiff as there is no loss of definition.

But that was nothing to do with websites - as well as making the photos to large for the site - will have to alter them all - can do that no problem.

Only trouble is I think the pages are set up for .bmp - so think I will have to do that singularly!!

Anyway thanks for your help - come and have a look when it is up and running!!
