"Cumberland's Clifton" a great information source
« on: Friday 06 February 09 21:20 UTC (UK) »

I am receipt of a treasure of a book by the Rev Richard J.S.Watson former vicar of St Luke's in the Parish of Clifton which includes Little and Great Clifton, Crossbarrow, and Bridgefoot. In its 108 pages it records in some detail the history of the parish from antiquity to 1970 with much about the local families, economy and life under successive curates and vicars. A number of rare black and white photos have proved invaluable to me in my research. It has helped me put real life into my Tree. It is titled "Cumberland's Clifton"..."A Short Guide With Historical Notes of The Parish And Parish Church Of Saint Luke, Clifton In Workington". It is rare and I was lucky to buy a copy. I post this so that others researching families in this very specific locale may know of its existence. I wish I knew how to make it more generally available and not  eventually lost in the sands of time.

Best wishes, Lumber-Jack

Hi Half Pint,

Kelly's Directory is cited for 1897 with a listing of commercial persons for Great Clifton including Joseph T. Stephenson, Joiner, Middlegate just below my great grandfather George Coggins , Reading Room and Library ( presumably in the Clifton Lodge for the growing population of coal miners). As an added bonus I attach a photo from the book of Middlegate circa 1900!

On 7 March, 1967 Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Tunstall were among the trustees of the Methodist Chapel in Great Clifton. The same George Coggins started out in the Methodist Chapel in the 1870'and 80's as a preacher and Sunday school teacher but  then switched to the  Church of England at St Luke in Little Clifton. I know that the current Methodist Chapel in Great Clifton replaced the second which in its turn  had replaced the original in the cockloft in Mitchell's Fold ( there is a full history in the book)which no longer stands. What I am interested in is a photo of the second which still stood in a dilapidated form in 1970 and may have now ( hopefully) been converted to a residence. If you can help me out I would be most grateful. I could also share with you much of my research in this area which is focused around Coggins, Donald;  the William Pit; Clifton House,Hall and Lodge; and the Churches and Schools.

Best wishes, Lumber-Jack

Hi again Half Pint, I looked at your list of Cumberland rellies and noted Dixon and Wedgewood in particular both of whom are in numbers in this book including a picture of Wedgewood's store. Are these yours in this locale too? Lumber-jack

Re: "and now Todd and Son" Pandora's Box

Hi to anyone following this somewhat bizarre thread. I was following up on the printers of the above book, namely George Todd & Son of Whitehaven and found this reference

http://www.google.ca/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=George+Todd+%26+Son+Whitehaven&meta=&btnG=Google+Search

It appears as "Detailed Result" on my search engine and is a guide to the print archive in Cumberland Archives. Reading down the list of printed reports which firms like Todd did are some very interesting and ancient ones from a genealogical perspective such as 'History of the Goodville family, or the rewards of virtue and filial duty'  printed in the early 19th century  or "Denwood family of Cockermouth 1877-1892". There are Dixon's there too Half-Pint! Welcome to Pandora's Box.

Best wishes and happy hunting, Lumber-Jack
