I have the MI books for Renfrewshire and happy to look for you. They cover pre 1855 - i.e. the period before death certs were introduced.
However to note they only apply where there is a headstone and stones were beyond most folks pockets.
If you tell me who you are looking for I'll have a look see
Ann

Hello Ann, Another Rootschatter gave me your link as I am keen to find where my Great x3 Grandfather is buried. He is George Weymss-Dalrymple and he died 1/1/1848 at Kinnings Cottage, Paisley. Enquiries at Renfrew Council for Kinnings Cottage and at the main cemetaries of Hawkshead and Woodside have drawn blanks. If you are able to would you mind seeing if you can find him in the index? Thank you, I hope you don't mind me asking.

Hello Ann, Bless you for remembering and checking. I hope the holiday was good. Well I really don't quite know what to make of this. George Weymss-Dalrymple died in Paisley 1/01/1848 at Kinnings Cottage. That isn't known to Renfrewshire Council either. I have several suspicions about this lot; one of which is that he may have been buried in a muslim grave but I cannot find out anything on those. I have even emailed the Muslim Society of Scotland but they didn't reply. I think they thought I was bonkers! You never know, maybe they did a 'Lord Byron' with him and sent him back to Madras where he was born in a barrel of brandy? I've had another thought, I have found a different transcription of his Will that says the death date was 11/02/1848. I know he died first but what if later on when his wife died they were put together and the headstone recorded under her name? She was Eliza Thomson-Hall or Dalrymple. I'll have to look up her demise. Can I contact you again Ann?

Hello Ann, I feel as though I've just 'got the cream' !!! Finding GWD's last resting place is prooving very difficult. I'm not really suprised about that especially as Eliza his wife is recorded by Scotland's People's BDM's as Eliza Dalrymple but her other names are given as Dawson Hall. GWD's wife Eliza Thomson-Hall had been married before to a Captain Dawson whose christian name was possibley Reid but its hard to read. They were divorced at some point. Where the Thompson Hall has come from, I really don't know but it is clearly Thompson-Hall in GWD's Will. She's buried at Sighthill Cemetary, Glasgow. She was registered as living there for 7 months prior to her death which was 11th April 1855. She died of Apoplexy and something I couldn't decipher. Her address was given as what looks like 14 Holmestead Street, Glasgow. GSWD was the informant. I don't know how she is recorded in the cemetary itself but the undertakers were A. Menzies. I wonder if they put GWD with her or if he was shipped in Lord Byron Style?
