Burke & Mythen - Completed
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 16:26 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help me decipher some names on 2 birth certificates. One is on my Great Grandad Patrick Burke and the other my Great Grandmother Maggie Mythen both are for the mothers maiden name and are marked with *. I have left a bit of info from the cert around it to give an idea of what area they came from and maybe the name could be local. If its unclear then I can scan again just the name.
Cheers

IGI lists Patrick Burke born 18 Dec.1880 Tomagaddy, Wexford with mother named Eliza Tinnott. However, The 'T' in Tomagaddy on the certificate doesn't match the first letter of the mother's maiden name. Am wondering if her name wasn't Sinnott (name certainly ends in 'ott').

Dec 18th 1880 is correct for Patrick and I thought it may be Sinnott, perhaps the IGI transcriber had the same problem as me !! I need to find out if its a local or common name in that area of Wexford.
The only name I can get for Eliza is POWER again I need to check IGI, does anyone have access ?  I will rescan next week but I dont think it will be any clearer. The date is 31st March 1881, father Patrick Mythen and mother Eliza ....... With it being 31st I would think it would be in the AMJ index's
Thanks for the input

IGI is free and online at www.familysearch.org. I did a parent search for Mythen couple and no result but you can have a look yourself. IGI has some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882 so it's possibly not listed.

There certainly were/are Sinnotts in Co. Wexford. Putting the Sinnott and Wexford into Griffith's valuation search brings up 655 references.

Looks like Power and Sinnott to me.

Sinnott is very much a Wexford name and Power is common all along the South coast, centred on Waterford.

Likewise

I go for Sinnott and Power. Compare the P's for Patrick and Power!

Thanks to all for the input, I think it has to be Power & Sinnott. Both names are most popular in Wexford & Waterford compared to the rest of the country. The two copies I have are from the Dublin records office and are only photocopies so I may be I need to get 'proper' certificates from the other place across the river (can't remember the street name) from which I got my Grandad's birth cert and it may be clearer. But it will give me a good start to start digging a bit more
Cheers
