Luffman family of Holme Hunts
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 20:01 GMT (UK) »

William Luffman was b Holme 1685(6) the son of William d Holme 1714 and Margaret Taylor d Holme 1715. This is the earliest reference to the family in the county. Does anyone know where they originated, and whether there is a connection to the Luffman family of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire etc. possibly as estate employees of the Wingfield Digby family or another landed family who had estates in both areas?

I see in fact that the earliest entries in Holme to which you refer were actually Luffnam, rather than Luffman.

But there are earlier references to this name in Hunts:
12 July 1680 marriage Izabell Luffnum at Glatton, a couple of miles west of Holme (on the IGI, extracted so reliable)
1657 marriage William Lufnum and Jone Coe at Denton, also a couple of miles west of Holme (Hunts Marriage Index)

There's also a burial of Elizabeth Lufnam at Denton on 14 Oct 1657, and of Richard Luffenham on 3 Jan 1692 at Stilton, a mile north of Denton. These parishes are all within spitting distance of each other so it seems likely that all these Luffnams are connected.

I would be looking at Denton parish register for a possible baptism of the William who married in Glatton, rather than looking for links to the south west of England. It looks possible chronologically that William and Izabell could be children of William and Jone. Denton parish register hasn't been extracted onto either the IGI or BVRI, but a transcript is available from Hunts FHS

You are of course correct about Luffnam, but standardised spelling came of 100 years later, so I wasn't too concerned about that. Luffenham is more of a worry though, perhaps it is just a family who bore that locative name. I shall certainly check out the parish register with the Hunts FHS, and likely contact them on the wider issue of the name. Thanks again.

If you check the IGI there are also four Luffenham entries (extracted) in Holme. That it is the same family also entered as Luffnam/Lufnam/Luffnum/Lufnum is demonstrated by Alice Luffenham baptised in 1698, parents William and Margaret Luffenham. Unless of course there was a William and Margaret Luffnam as well as a William and Margaret Luffenham! But I doubt it.

Richard Luffenham married Mary Man in 1721, and Richard and Mary Luffnam baptised a son in 1724.

I don't think there is any doubt that Luffnam and Luffenham are variations of the same name, at least in these four parishes in Hunts which all fall within a circle of a radius of a mile.

I don't think that there was any consistency in spelling for 200 years from the 1680s, rather than 100 years. You've only got to look at the problems at finding people in the censuses - even 1911 isn't immune from odd spellings!

While I know of 13 variants (modern) of the surname Luffman, with less than 600 members of the clan in the UK; the transcriptions of the 1911 census are a world apart, every person shown as "Suffman" should be Luffman, it would help for 2021 transcriptions if the people chosen to do it can distinguish between a capital L and an S in copperplate script and its offshoots! i.e native English speakers next time please!
