Thanks for the info Janet. It goes a long way to-wards answering my questions but unfortunately raises another. Who is the Elizabeth Ann Birkin who in the 1881 census is in service to Emma Wharton 57 Derby Rd. Nottm.

the second Elizabeth Ann was born in Eastwood. IF Elizabeth Ann's parents are Jonathan and Frances, the censuses state that Elizabeth Ann was born in Kimberley, the only way you will be sure is to send for the birth certificate which will name the parents, until then it is all guesswork

Thanks again Janet,Elizabeth b. Kimberley eliminates one of my options but still leaves me without the answer I was looking for. The Elizabeth b. Eastwood is I believe Possibly the illegitimate child of the first Elizabeth's cousin Eliza Birkin b.c1834 Eastwood. Confused? I know I am.

If you know the Gro ref you posted to start with is your Elizabeth, your best option is to send for the certificate. If not try asking for the 1861 census and see what that brings up
