Yes I do know of the Wells family you mention Robert was known as old "Bob" Wells in USA and family were considered wealthy Horsedealers and he was known as King of Gypsies in USA....... but then many were ...

He died in 1901 in USA aged 90
I think you could be right Matilda could well be a sister as several of the Wells Families have a Matilda so its a name that runs though family
Proving it is another matter .........

Robert Himself had a daughter Matilda b 1850/1 I know  married Hekeziah Wells > son of Joseph Wells  Roberts Brother they settled in America and married into my Buckland family and they were also linked to Stanley family

Regarding Robert Wells his daughter Pheobe  married Samuel Cooper another English Gypsy family in USA called Coopers of Somerville  ( also wealthy Horsetraders) which that family relate back to Matthis Cooper ( Windsor Coopers) who was friend of Charles Leland

I have worked out that there were several Wells brothers and nearly all the family came from Dorset in England
but not all travelled to USA
There was Robert George William Henry Benjamin James Josiah  .......... sisters > Fanny Janey ( Ganey)

My Grt Grt Grandmother was Unity Wells daughter of Benjamin Wells also brother to Robert Wells

Robert had also a son Richard b 1854 he married Martha Williams of the William Gypsies from England also famous in USA for horsetrading and owning property...... her father was  known as "Prince" Thomas Williams
As far as I can find out Richard Wells died sometime between 1876-1880 in USA


do you have the 1862 passenger list ? i would love a copy if you do

Thanks for this. Sorry didn't reply sooner but I've got a virus which has made me v dizzy.

I found that passenger list  info on the American Romanichals (Passenger Lists) part of the RomanyGenes site.   I will try and find it on another source and see if  it gives  us any more info.

I my name is sally i have just started this family tree thing,
My Grate Gran was Called Mary Ann Manley her Brother was Parvis, now i am not sure if this could be you family as it seems they married in to the Manley's later on , but My uncle who is in his 80s said that some relations to the Manley's were in the US, AND THE YOUNG MAN WALKED THE HORSES DOWN TO A RIVER,. THEN A MAN THAT HAD SHEEP ASKED HIM WHAT HE WAS DOING IN HIS STREAM, THEY STARTED ROWING THEN THE YOUNG TRAVELLER MAN GOT SHOT,
I HAVE ALSO SEEN ON A SHIP RECORD FROM NEW YORK IN ABOUT THE 1880+ I WILL CHECK TO BE SURE, THAT A HENRY MANLY AGE 30 HORES DEALER RETURNED FROM THE US,
IT ALL SOUNDS ABOUT THE SAME TIME, THERE MAY BE SOMETHING IN IT.
IT SOUNDS LIKE HENRY WAS BROTHER TO PARVIS AND MARYANN AS THERE DAD WAS HENRY , HOPE THIS HELPS

My grt grandfather was Joe Penfold who was Laura's brother their parents were Ned and |Racheal nee Holand and Brittania was a sister to two of my grt grandmothers, Trainette and Martha these were some of the children of Fred Roberts and Rebecca nee james. Hi Trainette, thanks for your reply. I have a birth cert for my grandmother Genty Manley and it lists Robert Penfold as Laura's father. I have found a Robert Penfold and family on the 1881 census but can't seem to find them after that. Can't find Laura's birth or Laura and Leonard Small's marriage cert. Any info?
