Joseph Symes
married Hannah Dyke (marriage details unknown)

They had 1 known son (could be more) Joseph Dyke Symes
possibly born the early part of 1820s.

Joseph Dyke Symes may have married in England and also had a son Joseph Dyke Symes.

The Symes family were believed to have come from Dorset, England.

In later years some of the Symes mirgrated to Australia.

Any help would be appreciated

Hello, My hubby,s tree has Symes from Bridport Dorset, but have only just started this line. William Henry Symes @ 1867 father not found as yet. maybe a connection here some where.

The Symes who Im looking for - all I know was from Dorset, by the 1860's they were already in Australia, maybe a little earlier.

Though being from Dorset - there maybe a connection somewhere along the line.

Its Possible but I will need to have a good look, by the way there is a Henry Thomas Symes inEast Street; Rope Maker in 1880, This could be another of yours

There's quite a cluster of Symes in Dorset (Bridport, Allington, Swyre) at that period. Some of them have been captured at:

I see that there is a reference to Joseph Dyke Symes in a Brisbane paper of 1866 but I can't find him in the 1851 or 1861 UK census.

The 1855 directory has James Symes as a Bridport ropemaker:

Joseph Dyke Symes died in Queensland AUST, (maybe Brisbane) in the year I868.

He did come to Australia sometime during the early I860's or there abouts

This could be both Josephs in 1841:

1841 HO107/294/9
Lyme Regis, Dorset
Joseph Symes, 51, woolstapler, Yes (ie born in Dorset)
Hannah Symes, 29, Yes
Joseph Symes, 16, No
John Symes, 7
William Symes, 4
Richard Symes, 2
Sarah Symes, 7
George Symes, 3m

If these are the right Josephs, then Joseph senior has married a second Hannah (there is a possible marriage to Hannah Fowler on IGI) as she wasn't born in 1819. (The 1819 marriage is a submitted entry).

Both Joseph and Hannah are in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, his birthplace being Bridport.
