If you scroll down to number 65 on this page you will see quite a lot of interesting information on Mary Atkinson's life. Amongst other things she married Daniel DIKE, and had a daughter Hannah who married Joseph SYMES who, in 1821, was a woolsorter of Chard:

This makes it much more likely that the 1841 census I gave you is the right one.
The James Dyke Symes referred to in previous posts was, according to censuses, born in Chard, Somerset in about 1825. It seems possible that Joseph was born in Chard (he wasn't born in Dorset) and that he was James' brother. If you want to be sure you could order this marriage certificate which would give James' father's name:

If you want to find Joseph Dyke Symes' baptism, it may be worth putting something on the Somerset board.

I have, at last, found James Dyke Symes in the 1841 census indexed under IQBER!!
HO107/294/3
Bridport
Daniel Symes, 44, Line M(aker), Yes
James D Symes, 17, Line M(aker), Yes
Daniel is dead by the 1851 census (Jun 1846 Bridport) so we can't find his birthplace, although he is likely to be the Daniel born in Bridport in 1796 to Thomas and Elizabeth.
Although it says that James was born in Dorset, later censuses suggest that this is not the case.
It might seem reasonable to infer from the above entry that James was Daniel's son, but I don't think that is the case, as there is no reason (yet found) for Daniel to name any children Dyke. It seems more likely that he is an apprentice rope maker to Daniel, who is a relation of James' father, Joseph (brother?); but this is guesswork.
Still no sign of Joseph Dyke Symes in 1851 or 1861. I wonder whether he went to Queensland earlier than the 1860s. If he owned branded mares by 1866 he may have been there a few years.
Someone has submitted details on this family to the IGI. It may be worth contacting them.

I've come into this a bit late, as I am also trying to track down James Dyke Symes - but for a different reason. He is named as executor in the Will of Richard Knell of Bridport (writen 22 Jul 1871, he died the following day - the proving statement shows James Dyke Symes was granted admon). The Will descibes James Dyke Symes as "of Bridport". Given the date, a quick 1871 census search throws up:
RG10-2028 f107 p 21
Tracing back 1861:
RG9-1367 f105 p 20
1851:
HO107-1862 f570 p40 (he is away, but his wife is there)
The suggestion he arrived in Australia in Oct 1848 is consistant with him not being in Bridport in 1851, but for him to be the same person in Bridport in 1861 & 1871 he must have returned to the UK (& not died in Australia).
Of course, the name is unusual - it is hard to imagine there are two who went to Australia & one returned - so not all the pieces tie together yet.
My interest is that Richard Knell married Elizabeth Symes (5 May 1818 Bridport) - so far I have been unsuccessful tracing her line - hence the attempt to follow Richard's executor - on the assumption they are probbaly related.
I have a further (closely related) James Hood married Catherine Symes (8 Apr 1803 Bridport) once again, I suspect a relationship, but currently stuck.
If anyone can fill in any bits I'd be most grateful

I have made some progress of the James Dyke Symes ancestry.
First look at the 1861 census: RG9; Piece: 1367; Folio: 106; Page: 21 This lists Judith Partridge as the aunt of James Dyke Symes (i.e. the sister of James Dyke Symes' father).
The Will of Thomas Symes of Bridport written 8 Feb 1810. DCRO DA54 MIC/R/240. It refers to the following: Wife Betty Symes; daughter Judith wife of Jacob Partridge; son Joseph Symes; other sons & daughters - Elizabeth, Daniel, Ann, Hariett.
So I think this pretty much proves Thomas & "Betty" (Elizabeth) Symes are the grandparents of James Dyke Symes.
It is also highly likely Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas & Betty) is the wife of Richard Knell (who subsequently makes James Dyke Symes his executor).
