MacKay, Scarista, Harris
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 16:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi

This is a bit of a long shot.  My grandfather Neil MacKay was born Scarista, Harris on 20 August 1870 and died Inverness 11 August 1945.   His parents were John MacKay and Mary MacDonald.

Neil had two brothers Norman and Murdo who came to the mainland between 1891 and 1901 with Neil.  Neil died when my Dad was 14 years old so I don't have a lot of personal information on my grandfather.  I would love to have a photograph of him.  Neil is from the same family as Finlay J MacDonald who wrote the books including Crowdie and Cream,  great aunt Rachel who is mentioned frequently in the books was my grandfathers sister.

Any snippet of information would be much appreciated.

Irene

Hi Firthview

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my message it is much appreciated.  I do have the children you mention on my tree and others.

What I was really hoping for was a photo of my grandfather and other family members.

Neil's sisters Rachael (died in 1960) and  (Mary Ann in 1963) on Harris neither had children.  Murdo never married.  Norman married and I have photos of him.

I visited Harris in 2000 and spoke to locals who remembered Rachael and Mary Ann but as Neil, Norman and Murdo left the island between 1891 and 1901 there would not be anyone left alive that would remember them.

Once again thanks for contacting me.
