Trying to locate William Delicate born abt 1818, he married in December 1841 to Harriet Harris, but does not show on the 1841 census, he was a Shepherd and could have been away tending his sheep during lambing season. There is no record of his birth or who is parents were only that he was born in Coombe Bissett, on his marriage cert, he names his father as a Thomas Kimber ?. Was he registered with his mothers name at birth, perhaps she was unmarried as no information seems to be available and we do not know who his mother was. Would anyone know where is the best place to look. Seems most avenues have been exhausted. Alan

There is a Thomas Kimber on the 1841 census living at Coombe Bissett, Wilts. He was born about 1799, so if he was William Delicate's father he would have been about 19 when William was born and not in a position to marry William's mother.
How do you know William was born abt 1818 if you don't know who his mother was. How old was Harriet at the time of the marriage and what was her father called? According to FreeBMD they married in Hampshire, so it might be that he moved there, rather than stay in Wiltshire.
Have you got William and Harriett in the 1851/61/71 etc. censuses? I couldn't find him at all, therefore as William Delicate and his wife Harriet Harris seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth, I did wonder if instead of Harriet taking his surname, he had taken hers and changed his name to Harris. I did a search on William and Harriet Harris but didn't have any luck. On the 1861 census there is a William Harris born in Coombe Bassett and his neighbours are called Kimber. However, his wife is called Sarah and as he gives his age as 36, that would mean he was only 16 in 1841, so probably not your William.
Sorry drawn a blank.
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie, Thanks for your input, if I can elaborate :-
William Delicate married Harriet Harris in Dec 1841, in the village of Martin where he worked as a Shepherd [on marriage cert] he gave his address as Rockbourne, and Thomas Kimber as his Father. they had three children, Alfred, George [my G/Grandfather] and John. Harriet died in 1847, possibly in giving birth to John [who died 1855] William then married Sarah Read in 1858. and went on to have another seven children with Sarah. William is in the 1851 census, as a widower, living with his inlaws, James and Sarah Harris and two of his children, both born in Martin. It gives his date of birth as 1818. A lot of information was given by another Lady who is a descendant of the Delicates and have been researching them but cannot trace before 1841.
I hope this makes it a bit clearer, maybe as you say Thomas was to young to marry Williams mother. I see on the marriage cert that both William and Harriet's ages were given as "full age" and they could only put there mark as a "cross" instead of a signature. Interesting

Hi,
I found this at the a2a website,
http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp
SALISBURY AND AMESBURY COUNTY DIVISION Catalogue Ref. B18 Creator(s): Salisbury and Amesbury County Petty Sessional Division FILE - Justices' Minute Books ref. B18/100/14 date: Jan 1819 - Jan 1820 item: Bastardy Order [no ref.] date: 11.05.1819 [from Scope and Content] Father's Name etc: Thomas Kimber, Coombe Bissett labourer, male child born 24 March last
Unfortunately it doesn't mention the child's or mother's name, if you contact Wiltshire and Swindon Archives they might be able to help further,

If you get hold of the Bastardy Order, it should give the mother's name. I have a Bastardy Bond from Lincs C.C. and that gives the mother's name and was just to register the fact that the mother was pregnant and give name of the father. In my case, there is no trace of the child, so presumably the mother either had a miscarriage or a stillbirth, although she did have an illegitimate child about 5 years later, who became my g.g.grandfather. He names someone as his father on his marriage certificate too, but there is no sign of a Bastardy Order regarding my g.g.grandfather.
