Jean, I'm trying to have a clear out, I really don't want to hang on to William, and he does look like the gentleman on the right of your pic, I would love to give you the photo , at least he will be with someone with the family name, if you would like him as a present from one rootschat to another ,just PM me with an address I can send him to.
best wishes Eilleen.

Jean, I thought it would be nice to receive William unannounced, he certainly had a faster journey than some of his name sake's did, I posted him on Friday 8th Feb early afternoon. I know in the past , people who do not know me , have gone out of their way to help me in my family search, rootschat folk are a good example of this, their kindness is something I really am thankful for . I am just chuffed that I found a home for William.

Hi Jean
I came across this site and your quest whilst googling myself! As an Illman living in Sussex I was wondering how your search was going? I am a photographer so I'm fascinated to see the images of old Illmans. Would love to know the story.
Many thanks
David.

I know this thread is quite old, so I don't know if any of you will see this but I really hope you will. My name is Kerry Illman. I am looking into my family history so I'm so glad I found this site. I saw this thread and just had to join. My surname comes from my mother's side of the family. Her name is Susan Illman, her father was Gordon Illman, he was born in Surrey in 1935. His mother was Elizabeth/Elsie Illman, but she died when my granddad was young from complications with an abortion and so my granddad was taken into care, this is why we don't know much about his side. I've been told that his foster mother always told him his real father's name was Charles Richardson, but the name Illman came from his mother's side and her parents were William Illman and Edith Illman previously Garford. I know Elizabeth/Elsie had two brothers and one sister, their names are/were Alf, Bill and Grace. Alf has two sons that I know of, they are called Alan and David Illman. Gordon Illman married June Stockwell, and they had three children, Linda, Sue and Colin, Sue went on to have me. And here I am If you think this is relevant to your family please get in touch. I'd love to learn about you all.
Best wishes, Kerry xx

And, I saw the photograph on this thread of William Illman and I showed it to my mum and the signiture amazed her as she has the exact same handwriting. She writes Illman the exact same way and we told my Nan and she says she reckons it's my great, great, grandfather. He and Edith went on to have Elizabeth, who had my Grandfather Gordon Illman, and so on.
As far as I know William was always known as "William Walter Illman" I think Walter was his middle name. This is amazing!
