Help with Henry Simmonds
« on: Thursday 11 June 09 00:46 UTC (UK) »

I started my family SIMMONDS tree about 3 weeks ago, I've used Census material, birth certificates, war docs and wedding certificates. Now I'm totally lost, I've manged to get back to 1807 Chatham, Kent, England with the birth of Henry Simmonds wife Elizabeth.

Love to know who his parents were...

Henry Simmonds was in the coast guard in the 1841 census residing in Folkestone, Kent, England. 51,61,71,81, Census have living in South Bersted, Sussex, England.

He had 6 six kids (2 girls , 4 boys)

I believe I'm supposed to go by Parash records Huh   Huh

Any help or suggestions will be welcome news, thank you for taking the time to read my post.
I hope I have posted this message int he correct section of the message board.

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

Henry was born in Chatham in Kent according to the census, while Elizabeth his wife was born in Portsmouth in Hampshire, as was their daughter Emma.  It therefore seems a reasonable assumption that Henry and Elizabeth married in Hampshire before Henry was posted back to Kent.

Henry Simmonds married Elizabeth Bray 15 July 1834 St Mary Portsea

Emma Simmonds, baptised 21 Jun 1836, Portsea.  To check that the marriage is the correct one, you would need to get a birth certificate for one of the younger children, born after 1 July 1837, which would include the mother's maiden name.  Although I see that there was a son called Henry Bray Simmonds.  So it looks like a reasonable bet!

A bit of info in this site:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Coastguards/S.html

You can look up information from Medway archives here:
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
This includes Chatham parish registers

For more information about pre 1837 searching in England, look at our beginners board.  There are lots on tips and links to various places you can search.

From the National Archives catalogue, Henry seems to appear in the Entry Books ref ADM29/43/78, serving in the coastguard from 16 Feb 1826 (when he was apparently 21) to 31 October 1864.

Good luck.

I would like to thank you for the information you have provided to me, you made it all seem so easy. Looks like the records I need are held at St Marys, I went through the available ones on line with no luck. I will try a request through this site and see if anyone might be going down there, wouldn't mind taking a quick peek for me.

Thank you again for the help.
