1881 Census COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 16:12 UTC (UK) »

I`m looking for Annie Daggett born 1868 York, living in Prospect Gardens in 1871.  By 1881 her mother had died and her father was lodging at Tanner Row without any children.
Many thanks,         Jane

I think so - it ties in with the 1871 census (father Ralph) and from `Familysearch` I found her birth and baptism in Bishophill Jnr in 1868 - must admit I haven`t actually checked the birth indexes for her

Tazzie, thanks very much for that though I am rather sad to hear she ended up there - it does make you realise how desperate things could be when one of the parents died.

  Yes sad ....

often if the father died the mother would re-marry very quickly. I have one where the husband & the marriage are in the same quarter. She had 5 children and married the widower next door who had 3.
Men had less dealings with the children and would keep working and give the children up.

Hello Jane,

I guess you have this but just in case ...

It looks as though both Polly (5 in 1871) and Ralph Nelson (3 in 1871) died in 1874.
Possibly leaving WIlliam (11), Henry (9), Elizabeth (7) and Annie (2) surviving after the death of their mother.  Do you have them in 1881?
There's the birth of a Ralph Nelson DAGGETT in York in 1893.  And on the 1901 census there's an R N DAGGETT, age 9, with father Henry DAGGETT, 38, Railway Engine Driver, and family.

Hello JAP
Thanks very much for taking the time to do that. I think I have found them all now.  Polly and Ralph Nelson both died as a result of scarlet fever, which must have been terrible for the family.  The later Ralph Nelson Daggett`s father was brother to the original one.
