Photo's of soldiers who served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1880 - 1890.era.
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 18:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,

My Gt Grandfather John Jones joined the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Wrexham in 1879 and served with them as follows.

India from 1880 until Nov1883.
Ireland from Nov 1883 - Dec 1885.
Discharged to Reserves Dec 1885 until Dec 1891.

I have no photo's of him so I am trying to make up a small collection by asking other people if they may have photo's of a relative who served with the same regiment in the same era that they are willing to share with me. Possibly group photo's?

I would love to create a small photo library of what his stations in India and Ireland may have looked like and the uniforms of that time.

I'm completely at a loss as to which board is best for this post.

I will put it on the Wrexham County board as well because there may be a better chance there of me making contact with someone local who may have a similar background.

I'd be really grateful to anyone who can help me.

Thanks in advance

Barbara.

Hi Barbara,
a good place to ask for photos and info as well is on the following website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast/sites/flintshire/pages/flintsoldiers.shtml

It does have details of RWF soldiers from all over North Wales and Peter Metcalfe who runs it is a mine of information.
Peter Metcalfe email: (*)

Also there are lots of photos on the Royal Welch Forum

http://www.rwf-forum.co.uk

so that would be another place to look and ask.

Hi Shep,

Thanks for your help & advice, I will look at both links you've given me.

My problem is knowing which board I'd be best posting on.

Because my Gt Grandad was born and living in Oswestry when he joined RWF in Wrexham 1879, so should I be asking for help on the Shropshire board.

There again, because I'm asking for Army Photo's etc, should my post in fact be on the Armed Forces board?

Can anyone steer me in the right direction please?

Barbara.

and more at rwf-forum.

I think that photos will be very rare though.
