Hello all, I have just been told by my older sister that our mothers uncle was Lord Mayor of Newcastle on tyne during WW2, How would I go about finding out who he was. She doesn't remember his name only that he opened a train that runs around a park somewhere there. Does any one live there and know what park that would be? Also I am still hoping someone can look in 1851 census for William Matfin shipwright born c1818 in Newcastle and his wife Elizabeth born c1822 in Newcastle. They were living in Nelson Street in 1861. I do hope SKS can help Jabawak

Thanks for the quick reply I just looked on the sight you gave me, none of the names for that period were my family names so maybe one of my mothers aunts was married to one of them. My family names were Matfin and Jobling, do you think there is a way to find out, my grandmothers sisters were Harriet Emma, Ellen and Rubina or Robina Matfin and my grandfather only had 1 sister that I know of Jane Ann Jobling. My William Matfin had father Thomas a sailor on his marriage cert and according to death cert he was 66 when he died in 1883 so the Matfins you found could be cousins but not the 1 I am hoping to find. Thankyou for looking for me I do appreciate all the help people on this site so freely give Jabawak

Here is a Robina Matfin but I have no idea if this is who you are looking for. You do not give many dates, just names. You have the death date of a Thomas Matfin and that's all I see. Who exactly are you looking for information about? When? - some idea of dates when they lived is essential. Name: Matfin, Robina Record Type: Births Quarter: September Year: 1898 District: Newcastle upon Tyne County: Northumberland Volume: 10b Page: 164

The URL below will take you to a list of all Mayors of Newcastle for some hundreds of years. There was a Matfen back about 1704 who was the Sheriff of Newcastle. http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/lordmayor.nsf/a/1905-1973

Sorry I confused you Hackstaple maybe I should have sent Audrey a PM my last post was for her in reply to what she had posted. I am still a novice on the computer let alone this site. The Robina Matfin you found was my gt aunt and thankyou for looking it up for me. The main thing I am trying to find right now is the 1851 census for my 2nd grt grandfather William Matfin a shipwright born c1818 in Newcastle and wife Elizabeth born c1822 in Newcastle. They were living at no 8 Nelson Street in 1861 and I have just found out through the Necastle Gov site that this house is heritage listed so is still there and if anyone lives nearby and could take a photo of it that would be wonderful. Thankyou to all who have helped me get as far as I have Jabawak

Saw this on the site of the Northumbrian Association - you can Google that:
Alan has unearthed remarkable incidents such as the funeral in St John's Church, in what is now Grainger Street, of a 14-year-old boy called Thomas Matfield, or Matfin.
As the coffin was carried into church, pallbearers felt movement and found the boy stirring from a coma. Thomas went on to work as a keelman and was buried in All Saints churchyard after reaching age 77.
