Thomas Scott
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 23:31 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone point me in the right direction, my Gr Grandfather Thomas Scott was born 1847 Rosscommon, that is all the information i have on him. He moved to Liverpool and i have his marrage. It's his early life, parents etc i would love to find more on. I have found two possibles for his father on the Griffiths valuation 1857, first one in the parish of Rathkineey, the other in the parish of kilbride. I do know that family where catholic. How would i follow this up. the only other information i have is family folklore of his mother being Spanish. Not much to go on i know, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does the marriage certificate not list his father's name and occupation?
Not everyone is listed in Griffith's Valuation and you can't assume you've the correct person without more information to confirm a person's residence.
Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to see if church records exist but you first need to know where the family lived (parish if not actual townland).
Have you searched for Thomas Scott in every possible census record to see if a more exact location than Ireland or Roscommon is given? 1911 English census seems to be quite good at giving name of birthplace in Ireland in many cases.
