PIKE family at Gravesend
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 15:52 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping to be able to trace the descendants of Joseph William & Elizabeth PIKE who were resident on Bernard Street in Gravesend for each of the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

One of their sons was Joseph William J PIKE (born at Bermondsey in 1872) who married Emily Louisa SHILLING in 1898.  Joseph (the one born in 1872) was a Mate on board the steam tug Britannia at the time of the 1901 census; I've also found him listed in the 1902 crew lists for the Britannia (she was managed by George SMITH of 27 Darnley Road, Gravesend, and had James G CURTIS of 28 Peacock Street, Gravesend as her master).  At the time of the 1911 census, Joseph (now a tug master, but I don't know which vessel) and wife Emily were living at 7 Bernard Street, Gravesend, along with two children: Joseph William J (born 1901) and Frederick James (born 1905).  I believe that Fred went on to marry Mabel B STONE in 1930, and have a son in 1932.

A second son of Joseph & Elizabeth was James John PIKE, who married in 1899 to Ellen Frances GRIGSBY.  The 1901 census puts them at West Ham in Essex, and in 1911 they were at 18 Malmesbury Terrace, Canning Town.  I know of three sons (James Reginald (born 1901), Leonard Joseph (1902), and William Albert John (1904)).

Any clues that might help with more recent members of this family would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

- David.
