Help needed with waifes in Farnley Tyas, 1901 census
« on: Friday 13 February 09 16:27 UTC (UK) »

A brother of my great grandmother named Joseph Darbyshire, born Jun Qtr 1892 in Bamley according to the BMD site was the youngest son of William Darbyshire and Ellen Eliza Clayton. Ellen died in Apr 1893 and by the 1901 census Joseph, 8 yrs of age shows as being in Farnley Tyas, Yorkshire, listed as a waife. I found the village (3 mi south of Huddersfiled on a map) but haven't been able to determine if there was a Home for waifes, or an orphange, or in what setting Joseph lived in as a waife. The children of William were given up by the father and my great grandmother and sister came to Canada as Home children. Hope someone can shed light on this waife classification.

Looking at the census it lists the address as Royd House.  According to Genuki -

ROYD HOUSE, a single house in the township of Farnley Tyas, and parish of Almondbury, 4 miles from Huddersfield

but I can't find anything else about it.  It might be worth contacting Steve Whitwam - he can be contacted through his website - www.whitwam.co.uk

I'm from Farnley Tyas and can tell you exactly where Roydhouse is.

It is between Farnley Tyas and Almondbury.

There is also a farm called Royd House farm.

As far as I remember it is just a collection of a few houses,an aunt of mine lived there in the 50's with her in laws and I don't remember it being a very big house, so it was probably not an orphanage.

Looking at the 1891 census there are a few houses listed as Roydhouse not just one, and the same in 1901.

It can be found just off Bankfoot Lane which is off Woodsome Road.

I will pm you the link on multimap showing the house and farm as the link is too long to post on here.
