JOHNSTON & MURRAY (Whitehaven) SHEEHAN (Egremont)
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 11:33 UTC (UK) »

This is the first place I have posted and the very start of my searches! Apologies if this is the wrong way to begin posting! I was born and bred in Whitehaven (1967!) and want to trace my Grandads line backwards. Robert Johnston born Whitehaven in 14/9/1908 died 31/1/1993, parents George Johnston c.1869 (coal hewer, 9 Little Scotland) and Annie Murray c.1871. I know nothing of the Murray family at all. They had children (John Edward James John George William Harold Arthur Jane Annie Lena Lily Mary and Robert) Robert was in the Navy for years and later worked for a bacon company, then care taker at the College. This is all I know about the Johnstons, except that Robert married my Grandma Eleanor Sheehan (spelling?) c.1903, died 2/3/62 who lived in Egremont because I worked there once and Grandad said he used to walk there and back to see her! He thought her family were from the North East and I have reason to believe it may have been Seaham? I know absolutely nothing of this side. I know she was a Catholic and I am guessing its an Irish surname? Apparently she made confectionery and cakes! They had two children together (John and Joan).

George Johnston c.1969   9 Little Scotland.
Annie Murray wife c.1871                m. c.1890?
Robert Johnston b.14/9/08              d. 31/1/93
Eleanor Sheehan c.1903     m.?       d.2/3/62

Any advice of where to try first is very welcome! Smiley
Cheers Eleanor Johnston King,

Hi Elz

This would appear to be your MURRAY family in the 1881 census-

8 Ribton Lane, Whitehaven
Thomas MURRAY 28 Bricklayer's Labourer
Catherine 30
Annie 10
Sarah 3
Thomas 5m
All born Whitehaven

Hmmmm ... it seems thatThomas and Catherine were not married when Annie was born (so there must be doubts as to her father's identity)
Marriages Mar 1874
JONES    Catherine         Whitehaven    10b   880
MURRAY    Thomas         Whitehaven    10b   880

1871 census
2 Gales Court, Whitehaven
Thomas JONES 60 Stone Breaker (Road Lab), Ireland
Sarah 61 Fruiterer
Sarah 34 Fruiterer
Catherine 21 Servant
Thomas 20 Stone Breaker
Anne  (gr dau) 1
Others born St Bees

GeoffE that is a fantastic start! I see yet another connection with Ireland through Thomas Jones. This Jones is a new surname for me to discover! I had thought all Grandad Robert's side were English decendants and his wife's side Irish! Interesting about the marriage after Annie's birth.  Which site did you find this info? I  can't thank you enough! Cheers, Elz x

Hi Elz

The 1881 census is free to search at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Other censuses are on subscription (pay) sites.

If you go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true you'll find a marriage

18 April 1831 St Bees (which included parts of Whitehaven)
Thomas JONES to Sarah FERGUSON which may be of interest. Wink

To add a bit more
1841 census
2 Market Place, WHitehaven
Thomas JONES 35 Labourer, IRELAND
Sarah 35
Ann 9
Sarah 6
Bell 1 (female)

1851 census
Gale Court, Whitehaven
Thomas JONES 47 Agricultural Lab, Ireland
Sarah 46 Fish Monger
Ann 19
Sarah ?
Catherine 2
Thomas 11? months
Others born Whitehaven

I have been looking things up on Genes Reunited and the Mormon site. I thing my George Johnston's father is a Lancelot Johnston. I do need to buy the wedding certificates to make sure I have the correct father. Its an unusual name for the time I would have thought.

I think Annie may have married under her "born" name

Marriages Mar 1888
JOHNSTON    George        Whitehaven    10b   800
JONES    Annie         Whitehaven    10b   800

1891 census
27 Castle Row, Newhouses
George JOHNSTON 22 Coal Miner
Ann 21
Mary C 2
David 1
William (bro) 18? Dock Labourer
All born Whitehaven
I think that William is the wrong age to be Lancelot's son.

1901 census
9 Little Scotland
George JOHNSTON 32 Coal Hewer
Annie 31
Mary Katrine 11
David 10
George 9
Thomas 7
Jane 6
Annie 4
Edward 1
All born Whitehaven

Thanks Geoff I was just putting in the details in the GRO order form for George and Annies marriage certificate. I was at a dead end because I didnt have the index number. How did you get this index number? I will then be able to find out Georges fathers name, especially if Lancelot is now not right. I can now use the numbers you have provided and send off for the certificate. MANY THANKS! Elz x

You need not pay more than £7 for a certificate -

1) online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
2) from Whitehaven Register Office

The numbers I have given you are only used by the GRO.  Whitehaven don't use them.

Or the marriage register may be viewable at Whitehaven Records Office.

I have a contact who may already have the marriage details - I will contact her to look at this thread.

Bye for now Smiley

Thanks Geoff. I have paid the £7 each for Georges and his son Roberts marriage certificates. This way I can explore Roberts wife's side as well. I have got further than I thought possible with the help on here Smiley
