A History of Blair Drummond Moss
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 20:51 UTC (UK) »

There is a talk with this title on Friday 6 March 2009 at 7.30pm  in Blair Drummond community hall with a £3 entry fee as a donation to MacMillan Cancer Support.
Speaker is Dr Ken MacKay.
I think it will be interesting for those of us with ancestors from there.
A bit of a long haul from Canada or Australia, mind you  Grin

Also a good book to get is " PERTSHIRE IN HISTORY AND LEGEND" by Archie
McKerracher.
There is a piece in it about the draining of the Moss and how the ground was leased/rented out.

Yes I've got that - somewhere, Monky!

http://books.google.com/books?id=2xgvAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA1107&dq=statistical+account+of+scotland+%2B+flanders#PPA1243,M1

I HOPE the above is a link to the chapter in the New Statistical Account about Kincardine in Menteith... about 1844.

And THIS

http://books.google.com/books?id=dco1AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA153&dq=statistical+account+%2B+kincardine+in+monteith#PPA151,M1

is hopefully a link to the same thing in the Old Statistical account from the 1790's....

interesting stuff about the people who came to work on the moss and lots of boring stuff about the engineering involved! Worth a skim...  Smiley

I am sure it was Ken Mackay who done a talk in Doune a couple of years ago on the Moss.
It was very interesting but you really have to concentrate on what he is saying as he speaks quite softley and also talks facing the slide screen.

Do we have a contact email address for the lecturer so we can ask if he will be using some sort of mike system for clarity.

Huh Huh

I would email the hall but my emails are down, and have been since Sunday morning.    Angry

Where exactly is Blair Drummond community hall.

(Typing in simply 'Blair Drummond' will require you to go stand in a corner for an hour or two )

It is on your left as you travel towards Doune from Stirling - just before the Kincardine in Menteith church. There is a car park. More or less opposite the cemetery.
It is after the Somers lane and Kirk lane turn offs but before the church. You'll find it nae bother!!

Damn, Damn and double Damn, Angry
I am not going to make the talk tonight and I was really looking forward to it.
I was particularly interested in seeing any old photos that the speaker may have had with him.
Never mind though, the opportunity might come again. Cry

Cheers  (I think)

Sorry you couldnt make it Fergie - there were lots of interesting old maps and a skecth from 1792 of the interior of a house on the moss and one of a mature house in the middle of a large cleared area neither of which I had seen before.
I am going to post a Ferguson thing separately for you and Pat and Kenny..
