Henry FIELDSEND death enquiry
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 23:35 UTC (UK) »

Henry Fieldsend (b. 1850) married Margaret Horner in Middleham in 1871. They had eight children: George 1870, Ellen 1873, James 1874, Lucy 1876, Elsie 1878, and Herbert 1881 and Annie 1889. Henry may have had another forename, but i can't find one in any of the censuses. Henry is listed as the father on several wedding certificates for his children, but I cannot find a death date for him or his wife Margaret (Horner) Fieldsend. I believe he was a general labourers and doesn't appear in many of the census. I believe he may have died between 1889 and 1906. Any advice on securing his death date would be greatly appreciated.

Hello   Smiley

Welcome to Rootschat   Grin

There are two death registrations for Henry Fieldsend in Yorkshire between 1900 and 1905 :

Sheffield  Q2. 1902  Vol. 9c Pg. 310  Age 69

Wharfdale  Q1. 1904  Vol. 9a.  Pg. 114  Age 67

You say he is named on children's marriage certs;  does it say deceased on any of them - that might give an indication of likely date of death  Undecided

Hello nleftfield

Welcome from me too  Smiley

Henry doesn't appear in 1891 or 1901 census at home with his wife, but she is stated to be married in both census.  Can I ask what makes you think Henry died between the dates you've given?

Have you found him in any census in the areas given for those deaths given below? (West Riding of Yorkshire)

If Margaret stayed in Middleham, I would expect her death to be in the Leyburn registration district (North Riding)
Have you had a look through the full GRO index, not just freebmd which isn't fully indexed?

Henry and Margaret's youngest was born in 1889, so I believe he was alive during that year. The wedding record for Herbert's wedding in 1906 lists father Henry as a deceased domestic servant. Thanks for your support and insights.

just because Margaret had a child does not mean that her husband was around 9 months earlier...

Why such a gap between that one & one before? were none others conceived or did they die before the next census?

The death reg. found by PaulineJ does seem to be the only one which fits  - right age and right area   Roll Eyes

Please shoot me down if I'm wrong .. and I could well be .. ??

On the census there is another Henry Fieldsend, b. 1852 in Barnsley .. I haven't had the best of looks, but I can't see this Henry in 1891 .. ?

Wouldn't he be a more likely candidate for the Barnsley death in 1885 .. ?

Just checked and Henry's wife Emma was a widow in 1891.

I think that's looking very likely, Pels.  It might be an idea if we could find the Henrys in census that match the deaths Mum44 found and see if they can be eliminated too, although their ages are a bit out.

I went right through the GRO index to 1936 and couldn't find another suitable death reg for either Henry or Margaret.

I wonder if it's possible that Margaret remarried and is under a different surname?

In 1901 there's a Henry b.1833 married to a Martha living in Sheffield which could account for the Sheffield death 1902 aged 69

haven't found the Wharfdale one yet though, will have a look tomorrow
