Dormston, St Nicholas
« on: Monday 16 February 09 00:11 UTC (UK) »

I am looking to confirm (a) the date of a marriage and (b) the actual church in Dormston - can anyone help please?

During the Great War, John Brown EDINGTON married local girl, Gertrude Georgina COWLEY who, although born in Rous Lench, was raised by her grandparents, Joseph COWLEY and Jane nee CLIFFORD in Dormston - I am assuming that Gertrude was illegitimate.  John and Gertrude were married on 3rd of January/February in 1916 in the Parish Church, Dormston by licence by the then Vicar, James DIXON.

Is the correct month January or February and is the church, St Nicholas?

I also have some information about the COWLEY family if anyone is interested.  Gertrude joined her husband in Australia after the War but visited "home" several times.

Any help as requested would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jill

I noticed that you have had no reply to your post so thought I would search for the church at Dormston. I can't imagine that there would be more than one church at Dormston so St Nicholas is probably right. This link shows photos of the churches in this area.

Sorry! Can't help with the date. Good luck.

Thanks Angela.  I did find several lovely photos of St Nicholas in Dormston and was hoping this was the church in which my people married in 1916 but wanted some proof.  The Directories until 1912 mention only St Nicholas and no other place of worship, so I would imagine this was it.

In 1901, Gertrude COWLEY was a housemaid at Eridge Castle in Sussex for the Nevill family.  Anyone know of a connection between the Nevills and Dormston or area?  Seems a long way to go for a job.

Hi,

I'm researching the Skinner family who seem to have lived in and around the parish of Dormston, Worcestershire for many years back in the 1800s. St. Nicholas is indeed the only church in Dormston, I've had the pleasure of visiting it twice and it is as lovely as it looks in any photo.
I have no information on the date of the marriage... sorry

Thank you Rachel.  I found some lovely photos on the web of St Nicholas, Dormston which does indeed look gorgeous.

Worcestershire History Centre has also confirmed that the date was January 3, 1916 so this matter is now closed.  Thanks to all, Jill
