Could someone look up the parish records for me please for: Edward McGrath & Mary Costray about 1830. It would be the Catholic Church in Thurles or thereabout. Children: Ellen born 1833, Bridget born 1835 and Mary and then a James in 1840. Any assistance would be helpful, thank you Mima.

Tipperary parish record transcripts are available on the Irish Family History Foundation website at : http://www.irish-roots.ie
the index search is free - record details cost €5 to view
Thurles is included in Tipperary North riding - and the list of parishes and dates is listed here : http://www.irish-roots.ie/tipperary-north.asp
the records included for Thurles parish seem to start around 1795

For some reason your scan file on the other post contained no data...
If you are having difficulty getting the scan done maybe you could take the cert to somewhere like a photo-copying shop...and they could digitize it for you.
It could be worthwhile posting the entire cert - as I am wondering about the surname Costray.. there are no entries for this name on the IFHF database anywhere in Ireland..

hi Mima,
To ensure that we stick within the rootschat rules it would be best to post just extracts from your cert... i.e. the place and surnames.
If you get your scan organized and cannot figure how to put together the extracts just post a message, and I'll private message (PM) you my email address so you can send the full image directly to me. Then I will extract the relevant sections and post them for you... if that's ok with you

I see
A r d l e ? ? o n
The Ardl seems clear the next letter looks like the lower case e in some of the other text (Newcastle/Tyne etc)
the last two letters look to me like the 'on' in Newcastle-on-Tyne
the next section is the the difficult bit - it could be a very stretched out 'w' or an 'r' followed by something.. The second part looks very like the 'n' in England
Along with the suggestions by Tony of Ardlaman or Ardloman I still think that - Ardvullane, is a possibility, although it is not in the Thurles area (about 50km away). The place name in Irish could be said as Ard Bhalláin , and Bh in Irish is pronounced W - so to someone writing in English could write Ardwolan. A simple mis-hearing could swap the l and the w
maybe some other eyes will be able to see other possibilities...

Hi Mima,
I think Tony is right about the placename. Ardlaman and Ardloman are definitely in Tipperary but not close to Thurles. The scan above certainly reads like 'Ardlemon' and may be how 'Ardlaman' was heard by whoever wrote it down. There is also an Ardlaman in Limerick but not close to the Tipperary border.
I'm wondering about the Costray name. Apart from your posts on RootsChat I can find it nowhere else on the web. Is there any chance it might read 'Costigan'? This name is most common in Tipperary, Kilkenny and Laois which are neighbouring counties.
If you could scan that name on the cert you have it might help you forward.
Dara.

Hi all, Adding the part of the Certificate with the name Costray on it. I too have looked for this name and can only find one for Gostray but no other details. Annie
