Stukely in Ely help please
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 20:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

I'd like confirmation of the following records from Ely, Trinity & St Mary's PR's if anyone has the time or inclination please.  Grin (the info below is from FMP)

Hull Stukley married Aster Houldum(? spelling) (aka Hester)
31 Aug 1666 St Mary Ely Cambs
- this record also recorded as 31.08.1660- which one is correct?
- Is the Groom's first name really HULL?

Hull Stukely and Hester had two girls (maybe others as well?)
- Sarah Bp 19.09.1671 Trinity Ely Cambs
- Hester Bp 19.06.1669 Trinity Ely (burial 06.03.1669 Infant)
(Bit hard to be buried before birth or has someone
recorded the dates incorrectly and it's a 1669/70 burial?)

Hull Stukely burial 1st June 1671 Holy Trinity Ely (Notes says he was a "MR" - ie possibly someone of importance)
- Is this record correct? and is there any other info on the PR's?

Hester Stukly (BT's says STUKELY) married 16 Jan 1671 to Samuell Martin at Holy Trinity Ely.
- Is this date meant to be 1671/2 'cos Hull died June 1671!!!
- Don't suppose it says that she's a widow by any stroke of luck??

And that brings me to a marriage for a Sarah (Stewkley) married John Doe 2 Oct 1688 Carlton-cum-Willingham. I know this record is "my" Sarah but I'd love to confirm (somehow  Huh Roll Eyes ) that her parents were Hull and Hester.

BTW - there appears to be no known record of
Hull Stukely/Stukley/Stewkely etc anywhere at all before or after the above recorded BDM's - I'm rather hoping that he was the son of a Stukely/HULL marriage but can't find this record  Sad

Sorry it's so long and thanks for reading. Any help would be very much appreciated as I've been stuck with Sarah for a very long time.

Thanks

Di

Hi Di,
Hull Stukely married Aster Houldrum on 31 Jan 1666 in Ely St Mary. Thats how it appears in the Pr's.
Hester was baptised 19 Aug 1671 in Ely Holy Trinity and buried 6 Mar 1669/1670 I expect its the latter as there are no other Hester Stukely's in Ely Holy Trinity.
Sarah was baptised 19 Aug 1671.
Mr Hull Stukely was buried 1 June 1671, no other info in register.
Again I think the marriage date should be 1672. I find these earlier dates confusing but its the only thing that makes sense!
Sorry can't help with Carlton cum Willingham parish registers.

Thanks Tempsford for confirmation from the PR's.

Could you please also confirm the dates above (RED) as they don't match what I had (although mine are possibly wrong  Undecided )

Much appreciated

No worries - we all have 'em  Grin

Tempsford, If you have a mo' would you please also check the PR's and see if there were any other Stukely/Stewkley (various spellings) or Houldum/Holdem/Oldham (sp?) family members in the area before or after Hull Stukley and Hester/Aster.

Of course, it's possible they both came from further afield  Roll Eyes

I still don't know if this is my Sarah but the Stukely/Stewkley name doesn't appear to be particularly common in Cambs as far as I can see from the IGI anyway and I'm rather hoping to find some sort of connection somewhere  Roll Eyes.

Thanks for your help

Hi Di,
There are no other Stukely's in either Ely parishes apart from the ones mentioned. The only other baptism I could find in Cambs was for an Elizabeth bap 1670 in St Benedicts parish Cambridge.
Can't see any Houldum's either. Sad

Thanks for checking Tempsford,

What a shame - looks like I'll have to search outside the county.

Much appreciated
