Hi Folkes, Can anyone connect to William Gunn Campbell c1821, married to Elizabeth monro, c1823. William was a monumental Sculpter. They had an extensive family. The line I am following is their daughter Janet Traill Sinclair Campbell who was a photographer and came to edinburgh c1900. Be grateful for any info other than the census reports from 1871 - 1901. Janet married Willliam Sharpe Robertson in 1904 and was widowed in 1910. She never married again and died in 1953 in Edinburgh. She had at least 2 sons, William Adam Campbell Robertson, 1909 and another son with the name Sinclair included. Thank you for any information.
Kind regards,Lynda

Hi Lynda
Read your message and your reference to a photogarpher with middle names of Sinclair and Traill strikes me as something of a coincidence when compared with my information.
Some time ago, I traced my forebears to a GGGGrandfather named James Sinclair who was a Mason and lived at Peathill, Pitsligo in Aberdeenshire. I have a monumental inscription from his grave where he is buried with his Wife Margaret Ingram. James Sinclair died 18 March 1850 aged 84. Now the coincidence! The gravestone inscription states that the stone was 'erected by James Gordon, Photographer, Fraserburgh' and the inscription continues with further information about Margaret Ingram and then concludes: 'MARY TRAIL wife of above JAMES GORDON d. 24 Mar. 1899 aged 71; said JAMES GORDON d. Sandhaven 27 Dec. 1914 aged 87'.
Is it possible that your 'photographer' could be a daughter or granddaughter of James Gordon of Fraserburgh?
If you require any further information, please let me know.

Not sure how much more info it may provide, but there is an entry in last Will & Testaments on SP:
William Gunn Campbell, 01/02/1882 - Mason, Sinclair Street, Thurso, County of Caithness, d. 11/11/1881 at Thurso aforesaid, intestate at Wick Sheriff Court, SC14/40/11

Hi Lynda,
I have a connection (through my sister's husband) to William Gunn Campbell 1831-1881 and his wife Elizabeth Munro 1831-1889.
They were married in Edinburgh in 1854.
My brother-in-law is descended from their son Sinclair Campbell born in Thurso in 1864.
I knew from the Censuses that William Gunn Campbell was a described as a Mason or Hewer but I did not know he was a Monumental Sculptor. Can you tell me more about his work?
I have more information about the parents of both William Gunn Campbell and Elizabeth Munro which I would be happy to share if you have not got that yet.
Regards Ian

Hi Lynda,
I should clarify my posting yesterday when I said William Gunn Campbell and Elizabeth Munro married in Edinburgh in 1854.
In fact the banns were read in the Parish of Bower in Caithness which appears to have been her home parish while he was residing in Edinburgh. Scotlandspeople gives the date as 1/1/1854 because the entry is undated but it appears immediately after entries for November 1854 and reads:-
"William Campbell residing at 117 High Street Edinburgh and Elizabeth Monro residing at Barrock in this Parish were proclaimed in the Church of Bower in order to marriage on three separate Sabbaths and no objections offered."
There does seem to have been quite a bit of family movement between Thurso and Edinburgh and back again as revealed in the Censuses etc.
For example William Gunn Campbell's parents John Campbell and Margaret Gunn are in Rose Street Thurso in the 1841 Census and in Morrison's Close Edinburgh in the 1851 Census. However John Campbell died at Rose Street Thurso in 1858. In the 1861 Census his widow is a Lodging House Keeper at North Side 5 West Adam Street Edinburgh.
