Actually wondering if its a new production company making this series? or a new director, cos its way off the usual standard.

I was thinking exactly the same.  The brief must have been, lets try and explore different angles but somehow lost the plot and centered too much on his father's mental illness.

Yes, totally boring.  My wife fell asleep, but I slogged it out until the end, hoping that at one point it would become vaguely interesting - but alas it didn't.  It's a long time since I've seen such self-indulgent rubbish on the screen.  Still, Mr Stein got a nice free jolly to China at the licence payer's expense.

I just found found the missionary grandfather on the 1891 census. RG 12/ 749/ 123/ 50.
I'm interested to see that he was born in Antigua, West Indies about 1840.
That would have been another interesting line of enquiry.

Gosh Jenb that is interesting info, I wonder why they did not use this information??

Well I have to say I agree with most of the comments here and its a shame I was looking forward to this one.

Funnily enough it was the same subject matter as the very first WDYTYA with Bill Oddie, his mother's illness but somehow that episode was so much better and more interesting, anyone remember the two old nurses?

I would have liked to have seen a bit more about his german roots.

My OH commented on Rick's first comment about not being too embarrassed or crying etc and wonders if he refused to let a whole chunk be shown for some reason  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Still, Mr Stein got a nice free jolly to China at the licence payer's expense.

Well most of the celebrities featured seem to have some foreign roots, Ainsley Harriott, Colin Jackson, Stephen Fry, Meera Syal, Jerry Springer, David Baddiel to name a few.  Jodie Kidd, as mentioned above, went to the US and Canada!

I doubt any of the celebs know what they are likely to find out before they go, probably not even the production team know exactly what will happen. So in some cases it may be a fruitless journey, and others fruitfull.

My licence sadly pays for more programmes that I dont watch, than do, but I would rather they paid for Amanda Redman to fly to Ireland to trace her family tree (Series 1),  than another omnibus edition of Eastenders.

Gaille - Our family trees may be more interesting than a celebs, but I cant see anyone else tuning in to watch it, and that would be, from a broadcaster's point of view, a total waste of money.

Well, I was looking forward to this but fell asleep just before it started - looks like I didn't miss anything!! Lets hope if there is going to be another series that they totally change the structure of the programme, and go back to the ways of the early programmes, i.e Bill Oddie, Jeremy Clarkson, Sue Johnstone, Jeremy Paxman etc......
I must say though - 'so you think you're royal' was good last night!

Sorry, but I think the production team know exactly what they will find.   It costs a lot of money to send a camera and sound crew abroad, so one or two researchers would be sent out initially.  Still, I suppose they had to pad the programme out with something, even if Rick Stein didn't find the grave stone or the church.  Strangely, the person that I wasn't looking forward to seeing (Fiona Bruce) has had the most interesting programme so far.

Hello everyone

Quite enjoyed the prog. I have found out through my own researches that it is sometimes harder to find out about ancestors in more recent times than in the far past . As I have German people in my tree I would have liked them to explore that line. But that's my selfish side and I suppose its more glamorous to go to China than Germany.

I was looking forward to seeing this episode, I really enjoyed the Fiona Bruce one, but this one, 39 minutes about his father and illness  yawn, but then they took a jolly to China!  I was hoping to see my son! they could have arranged it..

Fully agree with you hali-benny;  What channel did you see 'So you think your're a royal' on ?  These are normally very good and I am suffering from the  lack of a good genealogical programme to watch Grin

So You Think You're Royal was on Sky Three, monday night, 8 - 9pm, It is so much better than the current series of wdytya! You actually get to see how they reach the different generations and the work that has to be put in, aswell as learning about different historical genres. In fact I could go as far and say it has everything  Undecided
I've seen a few of them before - so I'm not sure if they are all repeats, but still worth watching.
The BBC could do with taking a few notes from it!!!
In fact - is Nick Barratt still the genealogist behind wdytya??? I know he was in the early series, but you never see him on it these days - perhaps thats why the programme has deteriorated so much???

Was it just me or was last nights WDYTYA with Rick Stine the most boaring one ever. They spent 3/4 of the program on his father. Left out all the German connections too. It has to rate as -10 for me and i was so looking forward to that one as well. I am sure they could have done a better job or find some one with a more interesting family history. Tottally disappointed with the show.

I think you are being a bit harsh,

Mental Health issues obviously relate to some people more than others and it was interesting to see the treatments they used, and they did travel back to the old family homes although with regards to his fathers side it seemed Rick knew the facts already and didn't need to research them.

Divorce wasn't spoke about and undertaken as much as it is now days and if you divorced you were obviously branded by society therefore it was good to see what lead his mother to marry after leaving univeristy (although they had acces to her diaries)  and the circumstances regarding the divorce (although they didnt get the papers and just assumed thoughts)

I have a minister in my tree so it was good again from that aspect to see Richmond where they undertook training and then were placed abroad and it was sad to see that his great great grandfather wrote for permission to come home but was just ignored and then the subsequent deaths of his children in China.
it was a shame they couldn't locate the graves.

so although there wasn't a lot of documentation and it was more on social history than family history it was still a good programme

and didnt his half brother Jeremy look like his father

I don't think it was any way harsh? It was a badly put together program and really didn't have much to do with family history  more to do with his families social problems. We were lucky they did not go in the the breading history of his dead dog Chalkie. Do you think it had anything to do with the credit crunch or they just could not be bothered searching for any thing? I am only to willing to say when they have made a good program, but when it was as bad as that last night. I think it must also be put down as really poor viewing.
Now the Jeremy Paxman  show on Sunday night about the Victorians through paintings was brilliant. I will be watching that series. Plus his WDYTYA was also brilliant . If you mist the Victorians painting the town show. You can watch a rerun of it on BBC iplayer if you are in the UK.
