HOWE, James Horringer, Welnetham Ickworth, Chevington,
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 18:25 UTC (UK) »

 Huh
Can anyone please help with finding a birth/baptism and burial date for  a James Howe who married Rebecca Gardiner in 1764 in Horringer, Suffolk. I found a birth record for Rebecca in Horringer as 04  Jun 1742. Also, all their 9 children were baptised in Horringer and his wife Rebecca was buried there in 1822.
I have CD's of the indexes of Parish records for Horringer, Great and Little Welnetham, Chevington and Ickworth as there are Howe links with these nearby villages. Especially Little Welnetham where  an account in the Parish records states that the Howe family had the freehold on Cock's Green Farm from possibly as early as 1550.
The only record of a birth of a James Howe that would remotely fit is in 1724 in L Welnetham - but would make him 40 years old when he married Rebecca and then sired 9 children through to their last child, Rebecca, whose birth was in 1785 and he would have been 61 and Rebecca 43.
However I cannot find a burial record for James Howe in any of the registers I have on CD which I find puzzling so any help would be much appreciated

Thanks very much for that. I have the Glemsford baptism under consideration. Not sure about the burial in 1814. If James Howe died before his wife Rebecca who died in 1822- I think that he would have been buried at Horringer.  Rebecca is buried in Horringer churchyard in an adjacent grave to her son Thomas Howe and also next to other 'Gardiner' kins folk according to the records on Tombstone Memorials.

Hi zumblie,

There is a Family Group Record on IGI for James How(e) and Rebecca Gardiner. It suggests that James How was born in about 1736. I'm not sure how accurate that record is - it's got Rebecca's death as being 1882 which means she would have been about 140 when she died and there is also at least one child missing (another Rose Ann born about 1781 who is my 4*great grandmother).

There is a James How on IGI who was christened on 25 MAR 1735 at  Glemsford which doesn't fit too badly with the James How in question if that 1736 birth is accurate.

Are you related to this family?
