In desperation
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 19:08 UTC (UK) »

Can someone please please help me?

I am on Scotland's People and I have looked but nothing comes up. I have paid to view certificates but maybe there is another way that I don't know about.

I need to find my Grandad's birth certificate.

All I know is his name James Patrick Macdonald but it could have been spelt Mcdonald.

He was born c 1887 in Scotland possibly Greenock.

His father's name was Dominic and he was a sailor. Dominic had died before 1911 when my Grandfather married in Wales. I have this certificate.

If there is anyone who has access to Parish or some other records or could give me more information I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanks

Hi Gene Genius
I had a look and there are four
James Patrick McDonalds  born between 1885 and 1910 in Scotland
there are none in Greenock
the four of them are
James Patrick McDonald born 1887 in Camlachie Glasgow
James Patrick McDonald born 1891 in St Rollox Glasgow
James Patrick McDonald born 1894 in Busby Renfrew
James Patrick McDonald born 1909 in Inverness
no MacDonalds in those years

Elaine, first of all thank you. The first one may be the one if this is anywhere near Glasgow.

How would I find out more now please? Does the certificate show that his father was Dominic?

Damn, damn, damn. I just don't understand it. My Dad (now deceased) always told of his Dad (James Patrick) being from Greenock and that his father was Dominic.

On JP's marriage lines in 1911 here in Wales it suggests he was born around 1887 but there was no place of birth. It only mentions his father (deceased)  Dominic who was a sailor.

Apparently JP used to sing the song "I belong to Glasgow".

JP died in France in 1918 when my Dad was only four so more information isn't available.

what age does he give at marriage
if he sang I belong to Glasgow it suggest that he probably came from Glasgow
I will check the 1891 one as he may have lied about his age

1891 has father James
as Dominic McDonald is not as popular a name as James
I done a general search for death of Dominic
there is only one  in Scotland 1880-1912
and that is in Glasgow
would you like me to have a look
maybe with a bit of luck JP may have been the informant on the cert

Hello there JP was 24 at time of marriage in 1911.

I have come across a death certificate for a Dominic who died of heart disease. The informant was Michael McDonald.

I hope this isn't costing you anything to look up for me.

it hasn't cost me anything to do a general search for Dominic
it only costs if you want to view the results
the  certs only cost about £1.20
but I have had a lot of people  on this site look at things for me
so I like to give a little back
its possible it is the same one as there are only two in Scotland but the other one
was to early to be yours
do you think Michael may be JP's brother if so maybe someone
could look up the censuses for you I dont have access to Ancestry
to do that
if you could find them on the censuses it may give the area James was born in

Yes, well I would love to think that this Dominic is in fact my great grandfather but it doesn't have him down as a sailor when he died.

I am on Ancestry myself but of course you don't have access to Scottish censuses. I have managed to locate a Dominic McDonald with a wife called Bridget but she was much younger than him. It doesn't really tie in with the findings of this particular death certificiate though.

I just can't fathom why I can't find a birth certificate for JP.

Hi Gene Genius,

Had a look on SP at the 1901 census.  Came up with the same info as Elaine with one interesting point.  Shown as living at 48 Clyde Street, Anderston are:

Dominick  McDonnell        75    Quay Labourer
Bridget McDonnell            60
Catherine McDonnell        30    Sailors wife *
Bridget McDonnell             ?      Rope Spinner
Mary McDonnell                  4    (Granddaughter)
Annie McDonnell                 2    (Granddaughter)

I found this by entering Dominic McDonald and using soundex.

The appropriate Gros Ref No is 644/10 003/10 /027

Hope this helps.
