I'm certain a birth cert would have been necessary for proof of age.

As far as I know, proof of age was not required for marriage to take place (unless perhaps in the case of a minor).

As far as I know, proof of age was not required for marriage to take place (unless perhaps in the case of a minor).

The cert is required so that you can prove you're not a minor

And if the officient knew the contracting parties it probab;ly wasn't asked for. I know of quite a few people who didn't get a copy of their birth certificate until years after their marriage (for pension).

thank you for your reply  you see I have search for my late mother Birth cert  in our local offices  but they are unable to find  one   I would be grateful for any help re/ this

one of my gran's was married around this time and born in 1896  - and she managed to escape birth registration somehow .... I eventually found her baptism/birth details on parish microfilm in the National Library

(they showed up later in the parish transcripts on the IFHF website)

she had great difficulty getting a passport in the 1960s
