I have a Robert Crosbie b.1746 who purchased Kipp in 1778. I also have a number of ancestors who are listed as e.g John Crosbie of Kipp. William Crosbie b. 1780 who sold his share of kipp.
My question is what is Kipp? Does it refer to the village of Kippford, to a specific area of land in that area or perhaps, to a house and estate. any ideas welcome.

Ive seen that one. ive also seen a site that seems to suggest that that cottage was like an annexe to a larger house that stands behind it, that might be called Kipp house. i still wonder was it all part of an estate or what. thanks for your interest harrywrag

Hi Purlin
Kipp Estate next to Kippford, Colvend Kirkcudbrightshire ?
www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dalbeattie/kippford/index.html www.dalbeattie.com/history/kipphist.htm
As indicated above, I don't believe it refers to the Village of Kippford, there are separate entries showing on the 1841 Census for example. John Crosbie and his wife (?) Elizabeth show there in 1841 followed by entries in Kippford which matches the description in the above link.
There is a will & testament entry on Scotlands People:
Jane Crosbie, 24/11/1836, alias McKie, widow of Robert Crosbie of Kipp, parish of Colvend Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court - Ref: SC16/41/10
I would imagine this is the Crosbie line www.hughadamson.com/Crosbie/FilesHTML/Ged4Web/Crosbj/d_5.htm
You could try contacting:
The Stewartry Museum St. Mary Street Kirkcudbright DG6 4AQ Tel/fax 01557-331643 E-mail: DavidD(replace with at)dumgal.gov.uk

Interesting post here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,66945.0.html
As you say, I wonder if the Kipp House that is referred there is connected to Kipp of old?

thanks for all the links. yes i can see now from the description of the land that it would have formed a workable estate, large enough to have provided an income i suppose. there must have been a house attached and it probably would have been Kipp House. i see on the rootschat link we have an owner of Kipp House. It looks as though his interest in rootschat has declined, his last post was in 2006! but i can try a pm to him and see what comes of it.
yes i will certainly also try an email to The Stewartry Museum as well. many thanks for your help.
