Knowledge of Glenmoriston area?
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 08:22 UTC (UK) »

I have ancestors Duncan McMillan and Catherine McBain (McBean) from Inverness-shire.  There 1827 OPR marriage says he is from Culloden and she from "near Cradlehall".  First child baptized Inverness, but next 2 bapt. in Urquhart and Glenmoriston parish.

On the 1834 bapt. it says "Donald McMillan, Smith, Torgoil..."

I've spent a lot of time this evening looking for info on Torgoil which seems to also have spellings Torgoyle and Torgyle.  Little success except for a hint that it might be (or have been) a small village near the River Moriston.  There is a bridge there called Torgyle Bridge.

Does anyone know any history of this village?  I'm wondering why a blacksmith in a larger town like Inverness would go to a small village.  They did immigrate to  Nova Scotia in 1835, so maybe they were making their way westward to catch a boat.

Hi Nick

There are 24 entries coming up for an address search of Torgoil in the Parish of Uruhart and Glenmoriston in the 1841 census. One useful feature of Freecen www.freecen.org.uk is that you can view previous/next households. This can help enormously when trying to establish where a place may be located, i.e. you may get better clues from place names before or after  Smiley

This is very interesting:  the old maps puts Torgoil miles from where I expected it to be, on the River Spey.  Following your directions for using FreeCen to search places, finding several Google books from 1837-1893, and looking for other inividuals on the same OPR as the 1834 baptism however, put it exactly where I expected - on the River Moriston.  It appears to be near Wester Inverwick, Dundreggan, Dalchreichart & Glenmoriston.

So now I have probably put way too much time into looking at an area my 3rd G Gparents were in for only 3-5 years, but perhaps it will lead me to finding their parents.

Try  www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~sm00dmd/    There's lots of information about the glenmoriston area for the last 150 years including all the census returns. There'a a very useful census database tool that shows there were at least 16 mcmillans in the area in 1841.
Hopefully there maybe a connection for you.      Jeanne
