McKenzie/Munro family from Strath aboard 'The Ontario' 1852 to Australia.
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 00:42 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I'm looking for Munro family members who had ancestors Myles Munro bc1804 (father Alexander, mother Phemoi), wife Catherine bc1803 (father John Grant and mother Marion), and children Alexander, Catherine, Donald, Mary, Allan and Hannah....who all emigrated to Australia aboard 'The Ontario' which left Liverpool, as part of the Bounty Scheme, in 1854. Included in the listing for this family, was my ggggrandfather Alexander McKenzie aged 26 and born at Strath, who was the son of Donald McKenzie and Catherine Munro.  The whole family is listed as coming from the estates of Lord MacDonald in Breakish/Stath, Skye. I want to make the connection between Alexander McKenzie and the Munro family. Was Myles Munro the brother of Alexander McKenzie's mother Catherine Munro?  They all travelled together, and I would love to sort out their family relationship.  Alexander McKenzie must have returned to Scotland before 1854, where he married at Loth. He and his pregnant wife then arrived in Australia in 1855 and settled here to raise their family.
Any information would be just wonderful
Many thanks,
Rosie

Hi Rosie,

There's quite a few deaths in Scotland for Catherine MacKenzie, other surname Munro, so not knowing her approximate birth year it's hard to decide which ones to try to look at. However, narrowing the search down to Inverness-shire only, I found 2.

One of them is widow of Donald Mackenzie, so she is possibly the one you are looking for. She died in 1885, aged 77, at Muirtown St., Inverness. If this is the mother of your Alexander MacKenzie, she wouldn't be a sister of Myles Munro, because her parents are Donald Munro and Elizabeth Fraser. This of course doesn't settle the question, because there could be another Catherine Munro that married a Donald MacKenzie and died somewhere else in Scotland.

As for Myles Munro, there is 1 in Inverness in the 1841 census:

Ashig, Strath, Inverness:

Miles Munro 40
Catherine 40
Mary 20
Christina 15
May 13

There seems to be no Myles Munro, nor any similar name, in Scotland in the 1851 census.

Best regards,
Francisco

Hello Francisco,
Many thanks for the information you have found re my Alexander McKenzie.  Since my posting, we have been able to confirm that Strath Alexander was not ours (how many Alexanders are there?...thousands!)  We now know that he was born in Golspie (or at least lived there from a very young age). Alexander and his wife Margaret Jane Tully came to Australia in 1855, and we have just recently been able to connect many of the descendants here.  We still haven't been able to find the right death for our Alexander, as his whereabouts later in life isn't known...so his birth date is still a little of a mystery, and hence, the Donald/Munro parents are unconfirmed.  One member of the family thinks that Alexander's father's name could well have been Robert.  None of the children of Alexander were named Donald (which is odd), but one surviving daughter was named Robertina.    We think that Alexander was born 1826, or a little before that date, and we know that Alexander and Margaret were married at Loth in 1854, just before they set sail for Australia.  Sadly, until we find the right death for Alexander here in Australia, and work backwards, trying to find his parents and siblings may well prove impossible!
Many thanks Francisco for your efforts.
Cheers
Rosie
