As Gadget put it, Jean/Jeanie/Jane (Jessie/Janet too, I've found) are all variants of each other. It just depends what records you look at ... census records are often more likely to use the pet names though.

It looks like Jeanie (we'll call her by that for ease Grin) stayed with her maternal grandparents (both, and then just her grandmother) until she was married. Her mother was probably out of her parents' house by then, and eventually married a Mr. Cairns. Census records and BMDs should confirm what happened to Jeanie's sister, Elizabeth/Bessie.

I'm not too sure this will help but it goes something like --

James McCracken (b. Ireland abt. 1817) and Elizabeth Riddell (b. East Kilbride 1818) married 1841
|
Sarah Jane McCracken (b. East Kilbride 1854) and John Riddell? (b. Huh) not married
|
Jane "Jeanie" McCracken (b. East Kilbride 1874) and Robert Dickson (b. Ireland? abt. 1874) married 1895
|
John Dickson

As you can tell, my graphics' skills are not great. Grin

This is a good site for alternative names:

Note that Patrick/Peter and Donald/Daniel were among the more popular alternatives.

Hume thanks again for everything,  do you think its possible the immigrants from ulster were too and frowing across because a guy with access to emerald ancestors says he cant find Roberts parents marriage there although it looks like his birth is recorded, my dad was convinced they had lived in bannockburn for generations and was a bit miffed to find they were irish as my mums from wicklow and  its always been war in our house.

Hmmm, not too sure really. My experience with Irish records is you sometimes get lucky in finding a record, but when you go to explore more, there's nothing to be found. So it may be that the parents' marriage did happen, but simply hasn't been recorded properly, etc. Ireland is a really tricky place to research records - however, now that you have a town land or parish (?), there should be some records (perhaps other than BMD) to help narrow down your family.
