Firefox is free and open source - so the entire source can be downloaded modified (and recompiled) by anyone.
Everything included in the application is open for inspection.
sound like the safest bet to me - that's why I use it...

Too little, too late for me I'm afraid. There's obviously been enough fuss made for Google to withdraw that clause, and it might have been wise to take the opportunity to put something in the licence that content would NOT be used as they originally stated. The fact that they don't state they won't do something means there's a possibility they might.
Enough people on here have raged about the fact that their material has been copied, misused and/or amended by private individuals. Anyone who now gives Google the opportunity to do the same is bringing it on themselves.

Is that a weakness or a strength ? The main reason I use IE7 is that there is safety in numbers. Although Firefox has made significant inroads in recent years, MS Internet Explorer is still the most-used browser in the world, and because of that, any security flaws in the software will be quickly exposed and patched. Surely the open-source nature of Firefox is a great help to hackers trying to find back doors ?

I would consider it a plus that its open source, if a bug is discovered there is a large pool of people prepared to work on it. The proposed changes go through discussions and reviews between many developers and the altered code is also cross checked. All this is voluntary...
I believe that response of the Firefox's development community to security bugs has been much quicker and more open than MS.
My understanding of the various IE security flaws is that they originate from the internal software architecture of the browser. The ideas were very advanced at the time and looked very impressive - MS demos showed applications running in browsers, pasting objects in etc. I suppose the Internet took off with such speed soon after that any gaps were open to abuse...
I think the situation today is much better than it was a couple of years ago where everybody used IE. Now we have a choice - IE, Firefox, Safari and others and now Chrome. All this makes it even more difficult for someone trying to infect our systems or scam us!
anyway - that's my 2c worth....

I'm sure there's arguments both for and against. I've tried Firefox a few times, but for some unexplicable reason I always seem to come back to IE in the end. Maybe I'm just an old "stick in the mud" ?

there are a couple of sites (which I trust) that I'll admit to using IE on...
I like my ad and pop-up blocking too much to use IE full time - I suppose it depends on the sites you visit!!

Adds and popups are blocked on IE7 and I used a lovely little popup blocker when I was using IE6 with no probelms at all =)

I have to admit to missing the IE toolbar but I'm still enjoying the speed!
I'm a techno ignoramus but being a "half empty" type of a girl I suspect that everyone who is making money with their online creations is spying on us. 
For those who get fed up with the google ads, why not try scroogle?
