Bowyer of Macclesfield
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 23:10 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in tracing the origins of William Bowyer born c1790 in Cheshire. He gives his birthplace as "Chester Sutton" in the 1851 census (where is this exactly?), I have yet to find him in the 1841 census but know the family was in Macclesfield. He was a tea dealer and grocer.
His first marriage was in 1815 in Aston Juxta Birmingham to Mary Brant (she died in 1830) - children were Mary Brant Bowyer 1816, William Broadhurst Bowyer 1817, Charles Brant Bowyer 1820, William Lakin Bowyer 1825, Caroline Lakin Bowyer 1825, Ann Bowyer 1827, Jane Bowyer 1829, and Elizabeth Bowyer c1830.
William's second marriage was in 1835 to Eliza Lowe. Children were: Eliza Lowe Bowyer 1836, Frederick Bowyer 1837, Augusta Bowyer c1845, Edward J. Bowyer c1851, George Edward Bowyer before 1851, Harriet Bowyer and John James Bowyer.

There is only one match in the IGI to William Bowyer born in Cheshire in this time and it is in 1788 in Weaverham, some distance from Macclesfield. Family lore says he was the son of Sir Richard Bowyer but there is no proof of this man even existing!

Can anyone help?

Hello Kells,

The 1851 birthplace is Sutton, Chester just means Cheshire.  There are a few Suttons in Cheshire, one near Middlewich, one near Runcorn, Great Sutton, Guilden Sutton, and Little Sutton, but maybe it's the one near Macclesfield
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/sutton1.html

There's this 1841 entry
HO107/132/3 Folio 22 Page 38
Mill Street, Prestbury, Macclesfield
BOWYER
William 40  Grocer
Eliza 30
Caroline 15
Jane 12
William 15
Eliza 5
Frederick 3
Francis 1
Samuel THOMPSTONE  15 Grocer Apprentice
Samuel DOWNES 15                "      "
Ellen SANDBACH 20 Female Servant
all born Cheshire

Wow thanks for that! I guess it must be the one near Macclesfield, as he lived there so long. I don't know how I missed the 1841 entry! Thanks so much  Smiley

You're welcome  Smiley

Have you tried the free website http://search.labs.familysearch.org ?

click on Europe on the map that appears, then you'll see the Cheshire records

There's a baptism on there for William Bower, 30 Jan 1791 Christ Church Macclesfield - parents Solomon Bower and Elizabeth

Thank you!

I'm surprised I've not seen that record for William before. I use the IGI on familysearch but it never gave a match to William in 1791, and Christ Church happens to be the church where all his children were baptised. Could be a possibility! I'll search it further.

Thanks again  Smiley

It's a fairly new IGI pilot site, so you may not have been used it before.  The Cheshire section is indexed, so hope you find your family

Kind regards

I must be unlucky - I even went to the library to use their internet and it wouldn't work there either  Huh
Maybe I'll have another go tomorrow. I'd like to see more of those records and find out who the other children of Solomon and Elizabeth were and maybe find more Macclesfield families.
Thanks!

Thank you thank you! I am overwhelmed with the response! You have been so kind, thanks for helping me. I wasn't sure if I'd find anything else or not so it must be worth a look at that page.

I looked at one baptism image, as it was a bit slow to load, the only other information on that was that Solomon was 'of Macclesfield'  Roll Eyes

Have just found Samuel's burial:

26th Sept 1825 aged 63  Christ Church, Macclesfield

(not sure if this is your William's father, of course!)

Going back to your initial thoughts about Sir Richard, I also found a marriage for Richard Bowyer to Anne Neeld, 1714, Weaverham, Cheshire  - but too early to be William's father Smiley
